January Short Story Competition - Submissions Thread

{UFP} Short Story Competition
Open from the 1st of January to the 30th of January.

Our {UFP} Short Story Competitions have always highlighted some of our best writers and story tellers. It is therefore my privilege to once again kick of yet another Short Story Competition for January. If you're interested in writing a story, please look over the following information carefully.

Content

The subject of your story does not need to be Star Trek-related and can be of any genre (including a reflective narrative.) Although this does allow much freedom in what you can write about, the stories must still follow the Forum Rules and contain content appropriate for your audience members, who can be as young as 13. The stories must also be an original work and the competitors are limited to only one submission for the entire competition.

In terms of length the stories can range from a simple paragraph to an elaborate ten paragraph plot. Keep in mind that this is not a competition of who can write the longest story but of who can write the most creative and well received one. I sometimes find that the shortest of stories are better than the longer ones.

Voting & Prizes

Members can vote on their favorite story the day after the competition ends, on the 1st of February. This voting period will be limited to eight days. The competitor who receives the most votes will, of course, win the competition. In the rare event of a tie a second poll will be created featuring the competition's finalists.

The winner of the competition will have their story featured on the ever popular {UFP} Herald, which was most famously featured on Star Trek Online's Official website. In addition to this, the winner will also win some free cryptic points to spend as he or she wishes.

Very kewl! Looking forward to it. As a suggestion, since this seems like a regular event, I would like to suggest the command come up with a general theme or topic for the short story contest. It would make it a little more challenging and give all of the stories a common thread. Of course, since this one has already been posted, I am referring to future contests.

I actually had that in mind. Our last competition, during UFP Borg Week, involved a pre-written plot which the writers had to work with. I'm wanting to alternate those type of themed competitions with normal free for all ones. Next month's will be themed.

On/Off contests does sound like an excellent idea. Keep things fresh yet challenging.

Me too...

Im kind of torn between throwing at least 10 hours at what ive got now or restarting from scratch... at 3000 words and still not halfway the story i was trying to tell... gone overboard a bit.. but no worries... i will get you something good.

DeuZige, I agree. I've written a fair bit, and only up to the introduction!

I've even invented a new class of ship for this book. I don't know how much scientific sense it makes, as that is not my forte. :emoticon_ShiftyEyes

Hopefully it will be okay.

Okay, i might have submitted mine twice. I was confused. After submitting i was thrown into the november short story competition thread, so i thought i had sumbitted it in the wrong thread. Another booboo is that i put my nickname under it (subconsciously) so please remove that, before you put it up for voting.

I managed to cut of near the beginning, take the story a whole different direction and even got myself to write it all to an end in a mere 2550 words or so... in the origional version i had more than 3000 words and wasn't even near the end of the beginning.. When i start writing, i can't seem to find the brakes!!

Hope my entry makes sense and isn't to annoying to read. Wouldn't want to annoy anyone with my ranting writestyle...

I can't wait to see what the others came up with. Or how many competition we've got this time! Last time was good quality all round. Hope the same goes for this round!

I completely agree! I can't wait to read your story.

I think that's a general rule when it comes to writing - there is no brakes.
I sincerely doubt your story will be boring.
If any, my story probably won't be too great. But luckily, when posted the author's names are removed until the very end. So it's objective.

I also have a question, can we post an author's note that will be published at the start of the story?
