    According to the official Star Trek technical manual, a tricorder is a portable "sensing, computing and data communications device".
    According to the above quite from the article - I can say that some smartphones, with the right variety of third party apps, do qualify for being a 'standard' tricorder. Searching for restaurants in enhanced-reality mode is awesome, so is using the inbuilt compass, magnetometer, and accelerometers to do basic surveying while simultaneously checking up stuff on Facebook and forums.

    The way people whip out their smartphones to check in on Facebook/Foursquare and SMS people possibly in the venue already, reminds me of beaming into an area and scanning it with a tricorder. Ditto for Google Latitude and homing in on some hapless friend's location like a hunter killer, because his phone is marking his real time location on Google Maps.

    It's the medical diagnosis function and 'disease detection' features that are possibly, very much impossible today.

    Although, in this case, there are some apps which can make use of the camera for heartbeat counting.
