I'm think of buying my self, as birthday present , a Star Trek book as I'm laking the knowledge you all seam to have about many aspects of the Star Trek universe.

As technical person I'm interested in learning about the various systems so I'm looking at some of the technical manuals as
    • the original 'Star Fleet Technical Manual '
    • Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise
    • Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual
    • Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise Haynes Manual
    • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual

    (based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Trek_technical_manuals)

As far as I know there isn't a bookshop in Belgium where I can pick up a ST book and browse through it before I decide to buy it. So I turn to you for recommendations before I buy online.

Is the original not completely out-of-date or still a must have reference ?

Any other interesting non-story books like "Ships of Star Fleet".. to start my ST book collection ?
Don't panic, the Answer is 42.

Some of the technical books are pretty good, the TNG and DS9 ones specifically.

Although not strictly canon (would kind of break the 4th wall to have their own book) they were written by those that know Star Trek best and were used as resources by the writing staff (of course by the time Voyager was being written the writers seemed to have either lost their copies or simply forgotten how to read).

The Star Trek Ships of the Line book is very good if you like starship artwork, it has re-releases from some of the calendars including some unique new pieces of starship artwork.

The TNG Tech Manual and the Star Charts book (http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Char...dp/0743437705/) are both awesome references. Other than that, Memory Alpha and Ex Astris websites are good as well. And heck, stowiki.org is a great resource that ropes in the 2409 STO timeline technologies and such.
