Hightower has been appointed as the new Executive Officer of Starfleet Academy, as announced by the Academy's commanding officer, Captain Lazereth. He has previous worked with the Academy's staff as a professor and provided assistance to new recruits as a Recruit Support Officer. On this, Captain Lazereth said that "due to Hightower's fantastic work within the Academy," that "he was the natural choice" as XO.
Upon the appointment as Executive Officer, Hightower received an immediate promotion to provisional Lieutenant Commander. All new appointees to the departmental command must first undergo a provisional period to exceed no more than two months before their promotions are confirmed by Starfleet Headquarters.
In response to his appointment, Hightower said that he would "like to thank Captain Lazereth for the opportunity to work alongside him within the great department that is the Academy." He added, "Watch this space for some changes."
