Gamers angered at the "bleak" ending of Mass Effect 3 have campaigned for an alternate conclusion - and raised more than $70,000 (£44,000) for charity.
Players have complained that decisions taken during the game have little effect on the ending - a key selling point of the series.
Canada-based developer Bioware has stood by the conclusion which it describes as "bittersweet".
However, they hinted extra material could be made available to download.
"We'll keep listening, because your insights and constructive feedback will help determine what that content should be," executive producer Casey Hudson wrote in a forum post.

I have been following this for a little while now. Whilst I can understand fans being annoyed if they don't like the ending Bioware were never going to please everyone. I don't think the ending in anyway takes away from the fun people had playing the Mass Effect games and at the end of the day Mass Effect is like any piece of storytelling, noone agrees with every creative choice writers make whether it be a book, a play, a movie, a tv show or a game. I think some of the flak being aimed at Bioware is very unfair considering the years of work that have gone in to the series. Constructive feedback is one thing but some of the comments 'fans' are coming out with are just silly.

The ending to Mass Effect 3 was great, even if part of it left more questions than answers.
However leaving an ending with many questions leaves the franchise open for future games, as this is only the end of Shepard's Trilogy.

I'll admit a certain amount of frustration with this. My time has been severely limited lately, so I've managed to squeeze in about an hour of gameplay most mornings and have managed to get through Mass Effect 3.
The game was fantastic: The interactions, the character development... I'll admit, I went all 'girly' on having my Shepard basically propose to Liara in the middle of the Commons like it was some kinda of soap opera.
But sadly I knew where it was working to. It had to. I get that. I read enough books and watch enough tv to know all the signs. It wasn't so much what the ending was going to be that made me upset (Well, it does a little bit... I want my Shepard to retire and be galactic good guy and whatnot... even if that wont make future games or stories), my disapointment is with having invested 100+ hours into a game having to assume what happens in the end.
I get it, I really do. The ending leave story openings and I wanted a conclusion., so there was no way on earth they were going to satisfy me. Maybe that is what I'm really disapointed with.
