Hmmm. Interesting choice of the use 'Hero' considering that he would have been partly responsable for the bombings on Dresden, a city which had no Military forces stationed. These bombing's caused an estimation of 25,000 (Nazi reports suggested 100,000) deaths, not soldiers, civilians. There are no records of any Wehrmacht or Schutzstaffel Division from being destroyed in this bombing, that was due to there not being any soldiers stationed in Dresden.

Interesting that no one was ever charged for this War Crime, Hermann Göring was charged for using incendiary bombs on London during the Blitz (also for atrocities which have no evidence for his involvement). Yet when the British and Americans use incendiary bombs which flatten a city with no military importance there is no Justice.

No one was charged over the nuclear attack on Japan to my knowladge.

But it's the winners who decide who is a criminal and who isn't.
The dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagisaki are a little different to the Dresden bombing. Truman stated that he dropped the bombs to prevent American deaths in an invasion. Instead the first American soldiers to enter Japan were given radiation poisoning, which is now passing on from generation to generation. These types of Radiation have caused many strange types of cancer.

Luckily though both the Japanese Government and the American Government have put lots of money into helping those who are living with the passed down effects of the Atomic Bombs. I believe America and most of europe also helped reconstruct both of the cities, and get them into a livable state. Hiroshima now has more people living in the city than before the war.

Dresden on the other hand has faced a bombing which killed lots of people and destroyed most of the city (95% of the city centre), and then lived under the so called Deutsche Demokratische Republik. They are still rebuilding parts of the city today due to both the bombing and then the communists.

I would also like to mention that a large amount of those who died in the Atomic Bombs vaporised, whilst those who died in Dresden burnt to death.

So my point is that the Allies did give some sort of compensation to the people of Japan, yes not enough for what they did. Whilst Germany was calved up by the allies, and never recieved any apologies or any money for the amount of people killed.

The way I see it is that Germany, Austria and Russia have apologised for what they have done in the Past. The city of Berlin destroyed Goebbels house and built the Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas (Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe), The City of Wien built the Monument against War and Fascism, and Gorbachev destroyed the Soviet Union. Yes these small acts of acknowledgement will never take away what they did. Yet it is still better than never acknowledging such crimes, Afterall Britian did not apologise for killing millions of Africans(more than those killed in the Stalinist purge) and then taking the Copper. That may be due to the fact that they saved a few through education and Cricket, but they also commited many massacres of those who refused to live under British Control.

Besides what he may or may not have been apart of, it is sad to see another WW2 vet pass away. Seems like every year it comes closer to all of them disappearing. Luckily a lot of their feats have been recorded and documented so that their heroics live on for future generations to admire.

Thats an argument many people like to tell themselves.
I'm sure if Truman decided to detonate it in the ocean Japan would have Surrendered, since it would of showed the power of the bomb. The problem is that America wanted to test out their weapon.

I believe Droxy stated that he may or may not have had anything to do with Dresden. He was sationed on the western front, so the chances are he did. Feats of bombing cities and burning people as a result alive is not somthing I appreciate or admire. But it is well documented.

I challenge you all to go to Dresden Frauenkirche, google Dresden bombings, look at the pictures of the people burnt to death as they are stacked on a cart. Then you will see that these men are not heroes, nothing is heroic about this.

Suggesting so is just a stupid form of jingoism(Aka Testosterone)

There is a reason why the plans to build a memorial to Bomber Command was canceled last year.

Herm the japs still wanted to fight it came down to the IJA and IJN about to square off the emporor ninja surrendered <i forget exactly weather the Navy wanted to keep fighting or the Army, but you can look it up i studied it in highschool extensivly <i should prolly brush back up on it as im a ww2 buff

admrial yamamoto said it best himself when he summed up an invasion of the states

"if we were to invade America,There would be a gun behind every blade of grass" japanese bushudo was lived by everybody in japan...

everybody was for the most part"<okinawa excluded as they considerd the island people outsiders<ie told them the americans would kill you and eat your kids kinda crap>,would of fought and died to defend there nation, just as back then sowould of every american

but we are off topic,i could go back and forth in debate al lday <i actually enjoy it>

    the point is this

" in war,the winners write the history" a sad but true fact

Admrial Yamamoto called off pearl harbor after the third wave, more were planeed he saw a continued attack as a dishonor <attacking a fallen enemy was considerd as such>

i agree, mabye we dident need to bomb both citys but had we simply droped it off the coast it would not of deteered japan we needed to show them by force how far we were willing to go, like it or not the Atom bombs acomplished that

The rest of your argument is irrelevant, I was not arguing that Japan did not want to fight. I was not questioning your knowledge of the Pacifc War, I understand that you studied this in Highschool (Which to me highlights that you are going to be biased) My argument is and always has been that the dropping of the Atom bombs in Japan and the Bombing of Dresden were War Crimes and should be dealt as such.

The Hiroshima Bomb killed 78,000 instantly, by 1945 the death total reached 140,000. Thats 140,000 out of 350,000.

I was also not arguing about its effectiveness, I merely stated it would have been just as effective if they detonated it in the Ocean. The Japanese are not stupid people, they would have understood.

So lets look at the Legacy of these so called Heroes.
140,000 and still counting deaths due to one bomb Hiroshima.

Jingosim/testosterone has once again striked .

Well I salute this 'Mosquito' pilot for all the 'good' he did during the war, however our Lancaster pilots who destroyed Dresden do not deserve the same hero status(in there eyes it was pay back for the Blitz).

In the end one man's Hero is another man's killer, so the sad thing is all 'heroes' are also killers.

This is the first statement I have agreed with on this Topic. 'Freedom Fighters' can also be called 'Terrorists'. I fail to see why I get so angry over Tags/Names, but I do.
