just had a little fiddle inside the box to see if anything was loose and nothing....the power supply fires up, the DVD drive fires up but the hard drive doesnt do anything....so it could be the mobo or the drive itself

so now i need to decide if I want to pay up to a few hundred quid to get it fixed or spend a bit more and get a new PC

And I have no idea when ill be able to do this....the earliest ill have some cash spare is the end of July but there are other things i need as well

Its a good thing i didnt sell my xbox or i would be in a gaming drought

I have a laptop that can run STO...just (doesnt run any other game well though), but its also 4 years old so i'd rather not risk frying it as well (had a couple of gfx driver errors recently)

Ive got an xbox, so i have some games to play...I just hope I can salvage the old hard drive....6 weeks of ME3 gameplay is saved on it

should be back on TS in a few weeks, once ive got a headset that works on the laptop

You know if you disconnect the hard drive you should be able to tell whether its the Mobo or the HDD.
Without the HDD connected, you should at least get the Mobo Bios to start. Also try flashing the bios. If its the motherboard, then you're pretty much out of luck, and hope to god that nothing else is fried. You could also try connecting the HDD to someone else's motherboard, and seeing if you can't boot off of it.

my mate had a look at it, tried resetting the bios and using different power leads, and we reckon its the mobo as well....gonna get an HD external caddy to see if the drive is still ok (want those save games)

and if it is the mobo then i may as well get a new machine...if you get a new mobo then you need a new CPU and ram....may as well go the whole hog and get a new system...only downside is that im gonna have to save up for it....which will probably take 6 months or so....so im not gonna be PC gaming for a long time....bah

Well to be honest unless the motherboard completely short-circuited or is so old that you wouldn't be able to find a replacement you can just get the exact same model and be fine (will need thermal paste to attach the CPU) but unless you fancy yourself tech savvy and are willing to take the (quite small) risk involved in replacing the motherboard yourself, you're probably better off buying a new PC.

Hell, even if the model of the motherboard is not made anymore, as long as your CPU is compatible with currently produced motherboards you should be fine.

well its a 4 year old quad core processor, but ive not kept up with PC tech so ive no idea what sort of mobo i need...i dunno...like you said, there is risk in just replacing and with my run of luck recently it will explode or something

well im gonna try to fix it next month, get a cheap mobo off of ebay and see if that works, but i think im still gonna save up for a new PC anyway...i will be back on TS in a few weeks though, after a get paid....but tbh ive been so damn tired from work im not sure i would have been gaming even if my PC was ok...had this cold/flu thing for nearly 3 weeks now....not good when starting a new job

ok for anyone still interested, it looks like ill be getting my PC fixed at the end of August, got a nice cheap quote so Im gonna wait until my next payday (got a few more things to do on the bike this month)
