Wings of Avalon
A Star Trek Short Story Serial
Preface
The year was 2411 and the Federation/Klingon war was raging on. The romulan Star empire(or what was left of it) aligned with the Federation after a series of events that were deemed classified.
It was a nice, summer day in Los Angeles as Commander Julian Lesnar was entering the starfleet command center.
He approached the reception desk and saw a young ensign, working away at some paperwork. She noticed the commander standing at the desk and said, "May I help you, sir?"
Julian nodded and said, "I have an appointment with Admiral Samantha Niels."
The young ensign nodded and said, "One moment." She looked at Julian's face, which had a very short beard, almost like a five o' clock shadow, ever so lightly tanned skin and black hair that showed signs of graying.
"She's currently in a meeting with the C-in-C," the ensign said, "It'll be another fifteen minutes."
Julian rolled his eyes. "Wonderful." He said, "Just wonderful." He then went to a replicator to grab a can of soda, then sat down on a bench close by.
When he sat, his legs were long, as Julian was a tall guy. this was to his advantage, as he was an avid basketball player. He wasn't spindly, like typical, tall players, as he was a little more on the heavy set side of things. Julian took a sip of his soda and looked out onto the Hollywood hills, admiring the landscape.
The young ensign approached Julian and said, "Admiral Neils will see you now."
He nodded, then went to the turbolift. About 30 seconds later, he stepped off on the 44th floor, which housed the special assignments department. He walked to a door at the end of the hallway and activated the chime. "Enter." a voice said, then he went into the office.
"Five years of being divorced from you," Samantha said, "and I still have to deal with you."
"Comes with the new rank, Sam." he said. Julian had been married to the now admiral, but it was short lived, as he decided to end it after she accused him of cheating on her. However, she was able to climb up the chain of command faster than he.
"What do you want Sam?" Julian said. He was clearly annoyed that he was called to her office after all those years.
"You are the only one I know who can pull off something like this." Sam said, looking out the window, just staring at the Hollywood Hills. "This came directly from the top," she continued, "It's kind of delicate."
"What is it?" Julian said. He was getting increasingly annoyed.
"A colony on the outer borders of the federation has been taken hostage by an unknown alien force." Sam said, "This happened about two weeks ago and we just found out about it because of how remote this colony is."
"How many colonists on the planet?" Julian asked.
"Around twenty-five hundred," Sam said, "and it's at least sixty light-years from the nearest starbase. It has no defensive capabilities. The feederation council fears that it might be too late to put together a task force, but the C-in-C disagrees. He's tasked me to put.....something.....anything together. Are you up for it?"
Julian sighed. "On one condition." he said.
Sam put up her hand, then went into her desk drawer. She pulled out a gold pip and tossed it to Julian. "It's long overdue for you." Sam said.
Julian caught the pip, then said, "That's the only honest thing I've heard you say." He then attached the pip to his collar.
"You have free pick of any vessel you feel that you need." Sam said, "If you need help choosing a crew, just ask." she handed him a padd with the mission information.
