Lego Starship from Lego MBA

So I am a bit of a Lego nut (I have a LOT of sets and pieces and at least one of every "type" out there) and I'd like to show something off. Up until recently, I did not do too much building of my own creation - when I was younger I built fighter ships and a base, but that was back when I "played" more. So recently, I got into the Master Builder Academy sets (yes, I am 35 and doing these kits) but boy the first few sets are worth it. You get some tips on micro-building and locking and sideways building. Things you don't always think about when making your own creations.

So a part of the MBA assignments is to make your own stuff with the kits. While I stopped doing the MBA half-way through, I am quite proud of my Lego Starship (probably close to a Sovereign at a guess). So without further ado, I give you in full awesome cellphone camera shots, the USS Legoprise - ok I don't really have a name for it yet, but eventually.

I welcome feedback, but only the good kind. Nah, just kidding. There was only so much locking and such I could do with this microbuild and the MBA kit pieces. But it is a pretty solid build for this scale (about 7" or so long, 2" wide or so).

I always thought Star wars ships were easier to make out of legos, that being said, That's a pretty good attempt at this!

I've never understood why there is such a stigma attached to being above the age of 13 and building with Lego. It's a much more interesting pastime than sitting down and doing a puzzle in my opinion. I can't say I'm seriously into building with Lego, but I do have an X-Wing and Gandalf with his cart and I'm 21.

That being said, brilliant little creation man. I wish that Lego would release some official Star Trek sets. Alas, it obviously isn't meant to be. You should make a variety of these things. I request a Defiant-ish ship

I remember one time I bought a bunch of those puny Star Wars ships that are made with like 10-20 small LEGO and made a miniature Enterprise-A, looked terrible but I was proud of it when I built it at like age 7.

Unfortunately, all of my LEGO are from Star Wars sets because I was also and still am sort of a Star Wars nut, so I can't use more generic parts.

Yeah, I built a couple "tiny" starships out of like 10 pieces but they are pretty bland. I'll try to do some more - I have a ton of small pieces that I could probably do another starship.

And yes, I have, as far as I can tell, every "micro" Star Wars kit (usually come in a bag) out there. I think there are 2 or 3 I need to snag off Amazon/Ebay. I also love these new planet deal (http://www.lego.com/en-us/starwars/p...ildable-galaxy) - can't wait for more.

Alright, here are a few other tries. Just note two things before you criticize - I did all three 1) in about 36 hours and 2) with as many MBA pieces as possible, although not fully. Also, taken with a potato phone camera.

Heh thanks Clulyan. One thing I should note is that these are all pretty solid builds (locked parts, etc). The only fragile pieces on any of them are 1) the nacelles (almost impossible to lock with this size/scale and the parts I have) and 2) where the neck meets the hull on the white/green/purple Galaxy/Sovereign build. Other than that, they are as solid as any other Lego build and/or micro-build.

Now to buy a bunch of these specialty pieces in "grey" and rebuild them all... Anyone have a gajillion dollars for modern Lego parts?

So awesome. All three of those builds are recognisable, and I noticed you took my request for a Defiant into account . The Danube wins the lot though, but that's only down to you having the correct colours available. It actually looks like an official mini set that comes in a blister pack, really impressed.

Yeah, thanks Ashley. My complaints about the default are that it isn't very round, including Deck 1/bridge, and the nacelles are not angled. In a bigger scale or with some specific matching pieces, I probably could have easily had tilted, side-bricked nacelles. But alas, we have what we have.

I'd say out of the four ships, the first one took me the longest - I actually built it twice, not liking the first take. The Roundabout has the most additional pieces - I had some army-greenish pieces from the MBA and another set and I just did not like the look of it so I dug out my own grey and got it going.

I also wanted to do a D'Deridex, but man having those "wings" (curved triangles that pinch at the nacelles and rear pylon and meet parallel at the neck/head)... no good way to do it at this scale with decent detail. There are these two takes from a Google search (tiny http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3497/3...21e33fff94.jpg and bigger http://images.mocpages.com/user_imag...251_SPLASH.jpg). The latter of those is probably the right scale to be honest, given it'd be about 2-3 times as long as the Sovereign-ish one I built. But that's a bigger scale than I wanted (or have enough micro pieces for anyways).

I agree with one thing you mentioned...you about have to be rich to afford legos anymore. They are so expensive at the store. Pretty crazy compared to what I had when I was a kid.

Yeah. They used to have a product called Lego Designer and you could build things on your computer (Lego CAD-like) and then you could even order those kits. I almost made a mini-scale Batmobile and ordered it. It would have only been like 10-15 plus S&H - expensive, but cool for your own custom set. You can still download the designer somewhere, but they don't allow the orders any more. And their parts ordering online is kind of meh. So yeah, it would probably be a combo of parts ordering and ebay batches, totaling somewhere between 2 and 4 gajillion dollars.

EDIT: Lego Digital Designer, http://ldd.lego.com/ Last time I used it the parts selection was quite limited.
