Yesterday was a sad day, I went into an O2 store and asked to buy a HTC One, which comes with the Android operating system. After three years on Windows Phone, first with the HTC HD7 and later the HTC 8X, I had waited, waited, and waited some more for the mobile OS to better increase its app marketplace and features in order to catch up with iOS and Android.
Alas, after three years, Microsoft haven't done a good enough job and hence my switch yesterday. Having now used my phone for the first 24 hours, I do not regret my purchase and pretty pleased with some of the more detailed settings available and more 'smart' features.
Is this an admission that Windows Phone was crap? No, I'm afraid.
The idea of Windows Phone in terms of its design and increased simplicity deserves a lot of respect in my books, it's come a long way since its launch in October 2010. It continues to slowly creep up on marketshare and is becoming more seriously considered as a contender in the medium-long term.
Just not fast enough for me.
PS: This is an in-joke with a few people who know I was/am quite the fan of Windows Phone.

I've been running Android since 2010. First I had the Motorola Droid 2, then the Galaxy SIII. I've loved the Android OS. It's ability to be customized is quite superb. The S3's performance is quite nice as well. Plus, you can have GIFs as your wallpaper! Lynx, I do think you will like your new phone!

Still a big fan of Windows Phone 7.8/8 here, and that won't change anytime soon. Love the Windows 8 tablets and Windows 7 (or I suppose Windows 8/8.1 on the desktop, preferably with touch screen). Everything is starting to sync up between devices, and not just files.
But I understand the pull to Android or iOS. *shrug* We will miss you, Lynx!

Well about time! Out with the trash! Android certainly isn't a huge leap forward but it's forward nonetheless.

I think you made the right choice for android! I might be somewhat prejudiced as that my experiences with Apple has not been the best so far

Ultimately any operating system is only as good as what it lets you do and what you want from it.
Windows Phone isn't a bad OS it does a lot of things right but it doesn't cater well to those that want a large range of Apps.
As for Android vs iOS, the main difference to me has always been what you can do with it. iOS is very easy to use and is very intuitive but at the cost of less flexibility. Android on the other hand isn't as intuitive and can be a bit more complicated but you can do a lot more with it. Really it just comes down to personal preference as to what you want and whether or not you are already well invested in a particular App and media ecosystem.
As for the HTC One it is a lovely phone, I very nearly ended up buying one myself a few months back. It is a shame HTC aren't doing so well these days as they make fantastic devices they just don't seem to market them particularly well.

I just like the Live Tiles of Windows Phone 7/8 and Windows 8 (on a touch device). I have never been a fan of going "back" to the icons of the old Palm devices. Now I know we have widgets and more live icons and stuff like that, but I think Windows has it right, at least for me, in the "here's info for this app" (times as many apps as you can see on the screen) department.
But yes, I'm an MS fanboy and slightly biased. Had a BB, then iPhone 3G, then Windows Mobile, then tried WP8 and went to Android, and now I'm back on WP8 and I don't see going anywhere else.
