It actually makes you wonder whether they chose him for the position solely based on his name. You know the crew of that ship will refer to his first officer as Spock and make constant Trek references as well, I don't know whether to be jealous or feel sorry for him

Would be far more comfortable on HMS Enterprise, Echo class oceanic survey vessels have one of(if not THE) biggest and most accommodating Crew Quarters.

I do expect Captain Kirk to get a lot of trek jokes, just like HMS Enterprise does being an Exploration vessel

My Uncle works on the shipyard that made that ship, he's been there for well over 20 years and he could tell me all about that ship. He's been there since the first Arleigh-Burke class destroyer came off the assembly line. They plan to make 3 of those DDX ships. It was 7 but you know budget cut backs.

It would indeed, though I can imagine Captain Kirk may not enjoy the jokes.

By then I expect it would be Admiral Kirk...which would just be even better! And I think he has probably gotten over the Trek jokes...but man, if they could find an XO named Spock...it would just be glorious! Makes me sad that I'm retired...I would have loved to served on a Trekkie ship.

Some of the newer US Navy ships are pretty impressive, look up the Littoral Combat Vessels. There's some pretty neat tech in those things.

Don't get me wrong the technolgoy in this ship is impressive (at least what I have heard) but it is ugly as hell.

The Littoral program will probably be scrapped. Way too many issues and now that we are pulling out the budget is being cut.

The ship is designed to have a radar signature of a fishing boat because of its design looks, and my Uncle spent years working on this ship in the yards so I wouldn't write it off like it's a Cryptic work or it's ugly. The F-117 was ugly too but she had a purpose the way it was designed too and that was to not be detected in the sky due to its designs. So like mentioned it's different looking yes, it's large than a regular destroyer yes, but its signature size is small, real small, and that's due to it's design looks. So I'd say they've accomplished their objectives for what they're trying to do for a ship. And given it's role in the Navy I'd say it is needed for it to be effective.
