In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

It's not a popular opinion but as someone who has been there, they knew the risks and should not necessarily be respected just because they where unlucky. They should still be judged on their actions alone.

I'll respect your opinion. Though I would state that the fact behind it is to an extent is fictitious especially in consideration of World War 1 and 2, in which for the most of it there was an international conscription and those individuals had no idea what the fighting would entail. On the first days of World War 2 in Britain it was branded the "phony war", that certainly wasn't repeated by November 1940 when London, Coventry and many other British towns were facing a barrage of bombs. I think it is also noteworthy to mention the nations which had it far worse than the British; those nations which were occupied being Albania, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, Hungry, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway and Poland. When you read in detail in which these normal civilians had to put up with from both the Nazi regime and then (east) from the Soviet regimes subsequently, then I'd hope that you would think that no matter how lucky one is, no matter what one did, to fight for freedom is a noteworthy fight and thus they should be remembered an respected.

They knew the risks but still had the courage to service. IMHO, this is precisely why they should not only be remembered but revered. While I do not share your opinion, I do respect your right to voice them and I thank you for your service.

Unlike nowadays there were not necessarly asking you to serve. In fact you often were given exactly two choices:
1. Get a uniform and go to the frontlines
2. Reject number 1 and be shot to death by your own people for desertation.
You didnt had much of a choice back then.
Death is always a tragedy, but being removed from life at such young age is especially cruel.
And one should never forget that without all those dead young men, voluntarly or not, you maybe would find a fuehrer picture hanging in your room.

War is always a sad state of affairs. I volunteered. I have pity for those who are forced to fight. However, I will only state my opinions on things that I know. One reason I have for my opinion is that I have seen unqualified leadership and it's potential to cost lives. One person, who I will not mention, very nearly cost the lives of a quarter or more of my platoon on three separate occasions including himself. Because I have witnessed this and other things I cannot show respect simply because they died, but how they died. I refuse to respect a man who, through negligence, cost the lives of his men. Again, this is just my opinion based on my experiences.

Remembrance day is for everyone who served, including the Baldricks, the Blackadders, hell even the Darlings. Its not just for the General Melchett's who move their drink cabinets six inches closer to Berlin.

Well.....i think I struck a nerve without intending to.
My grandfather was a Merchant Navy men & my mother has seen him sit in the living room of his house, in front of the TV, watching the National Act of Remembrance every year and he would just cry that whole time. He's lost so many friends in WW II.
I am so appreciative to those whom have served.

Why state negativity on a time of remembrance. Remember their sacrifice and bravery. Just because you had a rough experience doesn't give you the right to side swipe other people when their dead. They are servicemen that have fought for what they believe and I honor their ideals because they are better men and woman than any of us.
To my grandfather-- And my cousin serving. I honor them.

Not sure why there's such a debate going on, but I'll only add this, remember those whom ever they may be, in what ever country they may serve in, be remembered for their sacrifice they gave for the home they love and the people they cherish. This goes for everyone in this community who has members or themselves who serve such as I.
"All gave some, some gave all"
I still remember the names of afew whom I've known who are no more due to their sacrifice, the life they would have lived if they were here I wonder. But I thank them more than my family thanks me, because it is those who are no more that have made a true sacrifice, for their home and for those they love dearly.

It's not "lest we forget," it's "lest we remember." That's what all this is about — the memorials, the Cenotaph, the two minutes' silence. Because there is no better way of forgetting something than by commemorating it
. - Irwin, History Boys
Please, also remember that the service may focus on the military and those whom died in the defence of the realm, but it is also a time to remember you friends and family who are no longer here.
But hey, as Voltaire said
"I do not agree with what you have to say, but i'll defend to the death your right to say it"
