An ESF member's guide to get to the "front" of the room.

On the way home from work I was really bored tonight and my mind happened to wander back to a time when Rina still played STO......in this time there was an argument about which side was the front of the room. Rina and Bill couldn't decide which side of the Queen's chamber was front and back.

If I recall correctly, the whole debate was over whether you enter a room from the front or the back. I want to enter the debate and say that it could be either. To decide which side of a room is "front" and which is the "back" requires some basic critical thinking skills and common sense. It has nothing to do with where the door to the room is.

The best definition I could come up with in that drive home was that the "Front" of the room is where the focal point of the room is located. In the case of the Queen's room, the Queen would be the focal point, so that side of the room is the front, and you enter from the back......

Maybe this discussion is too advanced for some of our membership, though, with knowing the difference between left and right not yet a requirement for membership.

I stopped playing STO? (though I admit I haven't been playing as much as I used to)

and the answer is obvious where you enter is the front of the room. Bill is um how shall I put this delicately, incredibly wrong! Wrong wrong wrong wrong!

oh and in seriousness yes the focal point of the room makes the front. If you enter a classroom for instance the direction the stairs face/where the blackboard is, is the front of the room.

What happens then if the room is not layed out in the proper fashion of front and back.... I'll try and explain.

In my house my living room is 28ft long by 15ft wide, so a big rectangle. The door is in the centre of one of the long sides with a big window on the left and right side of the room as you stand in the door.

To me the front of the room would be the right side as this is where the window looks out into the main
street, but the focal point of the room is actually where the entrance to the living area is.

From this perspective the front of the room is really the side of the room, in my case.

So I would say that the front of any room would really depend on the orientation of the room, would it not.

Anyway just my ramblings

Wixi makes a strong point, but allow me to further ruin any logic that the door indicates where the front is.

The front door to my house is actually on the side of the house, so you don't enter through the front of the house, you come in from the side, same with the back door, also on the side on the house. Some houses on my street have the door at the front, some don't.

The school I went to, the front of the classroom was described as the side with the blackboard or whiteboard and the door from that perspective was once again coming from the side and not the front, with the exception of the science labs where the door was in line with the blackboard, however the main assembly hall had the door at the back of the room as the stage was at the front.

Now if we imagine the queens chamber is like a stage, then the front of the room is the stage, which is where the queen stands and so therefor, you are entering from the back of the room.

The front of the room is the side of the room in front of me, I don't know what you guys are looking at... but its wrong. Look where i am looking that's the front.

See it's all about perspective - nothing more or less, just what each of us perceive to be the front.

As someone in the architectural and engineering field, who has dealt with this thousands and thousands of times, you're all wrong.

Front and Back are determined by the user/occupant/tenant and are wholly irrelevant. The important designations are Plan North, Plan East, Plan South, and Plan West.

Heh, having just read this thread properly (Now that I'm awake, I was so sleepy earlier I was trying to figure out why you guys were discussing musical stage layout... I was that kind of wrecked), Mister Morton beat me to my answer.
