So I've got the fleet creds to buy my first fleet ship and looking for suggestions. I am a Tactical captain and have a few ships in the stable already. The ships I primarily use are my Avenger, Prometheus (Multi-Vector Variant), Sao Paolo and Galaxy-X. 
I have a few cruisers (Constitution, Constitution-refit, Ambassador, Galaxy, Sovereign) and escort (Akira) though I don't utilize them as much. There are tons of options I see and while I have some idea that as a tac captain I should be using an escort I like cruisers just as much. Not much help I realize but any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks all!

Well the Avenger itself is a great ship. If you're looking for a fleet tac escort, the mvam (fleet version of your Prometheus) or the fleet tactical (fleet version of the Defiant) are great ships.

A few people may suggest the Avenger, not tried that myself, but Prometheus may also be a good choice, if you are a 1000 day vet, you could also get the fleet Chimera, but not tried that either 
Or if you have the EC, there's a nice selection for lockbox ships.
Well the Avenger itself is a great ship. If you're looking for a fleet tac escort, the mvam (fleet version of your Prometheus) or the fleet tactical (fleet version of the Defiant) are great ships.
The problem with the fleet Defiant is that it has a wasted Ensign tac slot

I don't fly cruisers, not enough pew pew much to my utter disapointment. Personally I love my Fleet Prometheus, the gravity well is deadly. If you are into PVP the Defiant isn't a bad call as you can slot the 360 degree antiproton (all anti-proton build) and use the ensign slot for target shields.
That being said, the Akira is sooo pretty!

I love to fly cruisers on my tactical captain also, and I bought both the fleet versions of the Avenger and Sovereign. I had the Sovy before the Avenger came out, and then switched to the Avenger....However, after about a week I went back to the Sovereign. They have identical layouts when I used them. If you wanted a second Sci Boff slot over Engineer, the Avenger can do that.
They are pretty much equal. I chose the Sovereign to stick with because I think it is a gorgeous ship. But if you are a tac captain looking to do an Aux2Bat cruiser, either of them will crank out the damage for you.

How does the Excelsior grab any of you? I'm liking the Sov; the Odyssey while pretty is just too sluggish for me. (I have an Odyssey from an anniversary event). The Akira also feels like a good option.

Agreed, but sooooo pretty 
. Unlike that smelly Chimera!. That wasted ensign tac is the same reason I fly a fleet somraw and not fleet qin on my KDF.
And yeah as Neo indicated, on my fleet defiant I added the 360 degree antiproton beam and added beam overload to make some use out of it.

How does the Excelsior grab any of you?
If I remember right, it was the first cruiser to feature a LtCom tac BOFF, which made it very popular when it first came out. However you don't see as many around now that the Assault Cruiser can be refitted with the same luxury and the avenger has it as standard - along with an ensign tac slot.
Also, the Excel suffers from the stigma of triple ensign engineers which, as with tactical, can be a real pain. Filling those slots would probably be easier with a standard build of multiple EPtX abilities, but A2B would also be viable.
None of which is likely to answer your question... sorry.

I have been quite happy with my Fleet Excelsior, as you can tell by my signature. It has one tick more turn than the Fleet Sovereign, and well, I just prefer it. But, with that said, I picked up the Fleet Avenger when it first came out and it's been fantastic. I can not recommend it enough to fellow cruiser jockeys.
