So I'm going to be in the market for a new laptop soon as mine is getting old. Problems are arising with the speed, memory, hard drive, etc...

What I'd like is some input from the community on a good laptop for a good price that can run STO. I'd prefer to stay away from HP if at all possible, and definitely stay away from intel processors.

After some problems with my first order, my Origin eon 17 has been rock solid. Better hardware than an Alienware and they cost less too. Less being relative of course, since Origin produces high end hardware.

I looked at the Origin 17in... definitely a nice laptop but a bit pricey for my blood. If I had $3100 lying around, I would buy one.

I picked up a ASUS 17in laptop to mess around with as my gaming pic is a desktop and it's been pretty solid. Dedicated NVIDIA card, I7 intel, 8 gigs of ram, keyboard is solid design as well. I grabbed it off Newegg for about $600 something. They always have some pretty good deals. Although after 2 weeks with Win8....I wiped the Drive and put Win7 back on lol

Yes, I know the origin isn't very affordable. I had to save for mine for a couple years. Lol.

If your looking for a budget rig that can run STO well, I think you could find a decent rig for less than 1k. Check out some of the laptop reviews over at maximum PC or Tom's hardware, I've had good luck with reviews from both of those sites.

I will agree with you about hp hardware, I loathe to use it anywhere.

I have seen lately that Acer has been putting out some solid gaming computers they seem to be pretty reasonable too. About 700-900. It's funny that you want to stay away from HP as I have had the same HP laptop for 3 almost 4 years now not a problem though I added more ram about a year ago it has never failed me.

Possibly look into some websites that build laptops to spec if you can, rather than prebuilds, these can work out better, less bloatware and often easier to get fixed I believe. Having never bought a laptop, I can't say too much here, nor do I know many companies outside the UK.

Also, I doubt you are going to find a powerful processor that isn't Intel for a laptop, why do you wish to avoid them?

Forget Laptops go for a Tower Made that mistake a few years back and am paying for it now. A laptop that has been running for 6 years over heats,outdated GFX and has had more fresh window loads than I can count. But that is just if you are a gamer if not then get a laptop.

How much do you move your computer first of all. A laptop is great, and all, but if it rarely leaves your desk a tower might be a better choice. (I personally, don't do much computing on the go so I have a desktop pc for playing games and doing stuff that requires a good keyboard and then I have a tablet for web browsing or watching videos when I am away)

Here is what I'm looking at.

I prefer an AMD processor over Intel as AMD processors are designed for gaming. I have used HP before and I don't like the way the OS comes loaded with crap, and I have noticed the hardware they use, such as RAM, isn't that great of quality.

Is there a store or website that sells laptop parts and case?

I'm usually away from my Tower PC quite a bit and its only going to get worse in the coming days. Having a gaming laptop would be nice so I don't miss out on the STO adventures

I have a Lenovo Y500, its about 2 years old now so im sure they have a better model, but mine came with 2 1GB graphics cards and I got it off Newegg for only $800, runs a lot of games no problem. Only problem I have with it is the touchpad sucks, but if your going to be playing STO on it your not going to use the touchpad anyway.
