My most important duty...

Fellow trekkies,

This time last week I was made an uncle for the first time, now that a week has past I have come to the conclusion that I now hold a most sacred duty... I must introduce my nephew to the wonders of Star Trek.

To that end what do you believe to be the best introduction to Star Trek for a child and furthermore the age in which to do so? This a most important duty and I must not fail!

Start him with the TOS episode "Trouble with Tribbles". That was the first episode of Trek I remember watching. I absolutely loved it. It's still one of my favorites to this day.

As for age, start him at 4 or 5 years old.

Its a good episode but is it sciencey and trekky enough, probably best to start on something light but is TwT too light, hmmm.

As for 4 or 5... I don't have the patients to wait that long!

Ease him into tech talk. Trouble with Tribbles has the cute factor (Because gerbils without limbs [or is that terrifying?]) and a plot that's interesting enough to keep a kid attached. I'd not start before 3 at the earliest.

Star Trek is a tough sell to a young one. My nephew at the ripe age of 5-6 just did not grasp TNG or DS9, but he mildly enjoy JJ Abram's Star Trek.

Star Wars on the other hand... he absolutely and positively loves. He even had a Star Wars themed Jedi party for his 5th Birthday. He loves R2D2 but doesn't see Data as anything special.

Wasnt there a TOS cartoon series? I've never watched it but see if its any good and start him on that. Other than that I agree with Cehus that Trouble with Tribbles would be a good start, as for age, whenever he learns how to talk.

Oh Silynn you poor poor man, I am so sorry. There may be hope yet, do not give in!

I am not really fond of showing him JJTrek as the strobe lights may harm his development. TAS is not a bad shout though Gillion, I will need to look into that.

Haha. Truly, I wonder if he views Star Trek like I view "Battle Beyond the Stars". I look at that Sci-Fi movie that come out after Star Wars and wonder what people were thinking. hahaha.

Star Trek is pretty deep, like Empire Strikes Back deep... I was way too young when I saw it and did not appreciate the depth of it until much much later. hahaha.

So yeah, perhaps there is hope... but R2D2 still trumps Data in the youngling's mind...

Well I can't say I blame him, R2D2 is pretty damn cool. Of the Star Trek he has seen other than JJ, has he had much preference?

My little guy is about to turn 1, so I've turned on Trek occasionally in the background while I'm doing my morning exercise to see if he grabs onto anything.

Thus far he downright loves the Voyager intro, it's mesmerizing for him, to a scale I've used it a couple of times when he is being stubborn about diaper changes.

The rest he doesn't care for, but I figure baby steps is appropriate
