I used to be a fan of VLC, seemed to play everything, but these days I find Media Player Class is more reliable, and better in general.

I continue to use Windows Media Player for my main use of playing videos, but VLC is still top class in providing playback for HD files such as mkv. Until Microsoft add these kind of extra features to WMP, you'll see me still using VLC player.

I'm a huge fan of VLC. VLC is great (and open source!)
For my OS, it's way better than the crappy QuickTime Player X that came with the OS. Though, QuickTime Player 7 Pro is still neat.
The mission is, and always will be, the journey itself.

I do love to use VLC but i try to use either program specific players (like quick time and flash) for those specific ones. However I do play all my DVDs through VLC rather than windows media player. They tend to work better and never crash in VLC but WMP has a tendancy to be flakey for me, even on a brand new rig.
Ive not heard of Media player class, is there something particularly good about it?

Media Player Classic
It is basically a very modern player software with an simple but pleasant interface.

I have VLC installed for several years now. It comes in handy if you have some odd file formats, it however has some flaws, mostly in the area of user interface.

Media Player Classic on Windows, VLC on Mac OS X, and mplayer on *nix. VLC sometimes acts weird on *nix and MPlayer acts weird on Windows.
