Hello UFP
Reialgo is an online handle name that I've been using for quite a few years now, so why the in game name? Because I figured I ought to use a more proper name for the sake of possible roleplaying, and so I used the same name as my character from Eve online!
I played STO back in it's maiden days(at one point in time, I did in-fact own a "red matter capacitor") but I ended up quiting a few months after launch since back then endgame just felt so barebones. I did come back a few times but I ended up completely slotting it into the back of my head well before the overhaul of STFs, Fleets and stuff like the Dyson sphere. I've been back for a few weeks now and enjoying most of the overhauls in place, there's certainly more to do even if it's gated behind hella steep time and resource sinks...
As for the rest of trek I was first introduced to the series through daily 6pm evening episodes on BBC when I was 7 or 8, TNG has honestly been the only trek show I've watched, I've got season 1-3 of TNG but thats it. I mean to watch the rest of TNG and DS9 someday, but my backlog is a long and terrifying one. I also played a few of the star trek games prior to STO, none of the classics like Bridge commander or the Armada games because back then I was lucky for our comp to load a word file, but I have played Invasion(p gud) Shattered universe(Invasion's bigger cousin really) & Legacy(HA). As an aside I'm casually playing the SotSE mod Star trek armada 3 and loving it, those models are so pretty *.*
And yes it's note remotely near afternoon, just roll with it

I had smiliar problems with STO after launch, but right now while it's not perfect it is a fun game ^^

I'm glad you gave STO another chance, you are right it certainly isn't perfect but it is much improved over what it was although personally I think Cryptic are adding in too much grind (Fleet holdings, DOFFs, Reputation, Crafting).
You mentioned playing a few of the older Star Trek games so I would definitely make sure to check out the RESERVES whilst you are here, they actively support a number of the older titles and members can get the multiplayer part of Elite Force for free, there are also a number of members that play the 'Armada 3' mod.
