Previously, I read about how medical tricorders were in development, but holodecks have also been something from Star Trek that often fascinates people. Personally, I like the idea of a holodeck, it would be great to experience something where you can be more involved, there have been many ventures into this, the Oculus Rift has potential but not the same.
According to New Scientist, link here, Microsoft have developed RoomAlive which turns a whole room into the gaming area. Although, I think a flat room might be the best idea, not one with furniture!
Currently, it all seems to be light and perspective tricks, perhaps one day there can be tactile feedback too, a replicator would also be nice...

See, if I were developing something ala Oculus Rift, I would have it so it images the environment and overlays the virtual over the physical. That way, it is more realistic, immersive, and will work for any environment.

Its interesting but its still only a projector that you still see your shadow in have one in my own bed room for films ect not as fancy as the room in the clip. Would not call this a holodeck of any sort more like VR with out the Head set.

You could just as well project the images from the back. Of course it needs more space then. a LOT more space. Not sure how it would work for the floor though, maybe thick Plexiglass? It would probably need some kind of support. This is really exciting!

It might still be some way off from a fully functioning holodeck but it is a pretty cool concept.
