This morning, Telltale Games, known for their story driven rpgs The Wolf Among Us, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead, announced that they will be working with Mojang to develop a standalone game based on Minecraft.
Details are few and far between at this time, but Mojang and Telltale have stated:
- The first episode will release in 2015 on PC, Xbox, Playstation, IOS, and Android
- The game WILL NOT be an add-on for Minecraft
- The game will not tell the story of Steve, or explain the world of Minecraft in detail
- Telltale will also be working with members of the community to make the game 'as Minecraft as possible'

How will this work? Didn't Microsoft by Minecraft and therefore own the name to it?
Sounds like an interesting idea, I remember Telltale for the Sam and Max series, a game which I did like, not played any of their more recent ones but I hear they are good.

Sounds like an interesting idea, I remember Telltale for the Sam and Max series, a game which I did like, not played any of their more recent ones but I hear they are good.
I imagine it will be similar to how Telltale was able to make Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Borderlands games. The intricacies of ip licensing are a subtle science and exact art that I don't understand
Telltale does seem to have a talent for getting companies to let them use their characters. The Poker Night games come to mind, as they featured characters from a dozen different franchises

The Walking Dead games were a great offshoot of the main cast and series. I imagine this Minecraft spinoff will be the same deal. Very intriguing in any case.

The Game is based on Walking Dead comics. Not the TV Series afaik.

I'm a bit confused by this.
Minecraft has no characters and has no lore. They could literally come up with any story, put in a few of the Minecraft monsters, draw it in 8-bit graphics and call it a Minecraft story.
The Lego movie had some Lego related plot elements, maybe Telltale will do something similar with Minecraft...
