I'd like to see a recut of both movies without the lens flares and see if they are actually watchable.

Even without the Lens Flares, JJ's direction with the movies were very anti-Trek. Honestly, as distracting as some of the Flares were, it doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the entertainment value of both movies but I miss the gravitas of human issues and sciences that Star Trek is *was* known for. I think he should rather apologize for uprooting the whole Star Trek genre and then leaving mess to someone else so he could go work on Star Wars.

Mazoue is right IMHO.
I have no quarrel with the films as films. They were entertaining sci-fi films, and I definitely would go and see the third.
My issue, however, is the 40-50-odd years of canon he has thrown out of the window to make his films. He has also taken it to more of a 'popularist' approach - while good for getting new people into Star Trek and entertaining them, it really isn't Star Trek to me anymore. The science in science fiction is gone, it is now more of a 'futuristic action movie'. That, however, is just my opinion.

+1 with Levon's opinion. Even the movies of the 50s had more suspense and mental interest than JJ's movies. Computer graphics are nice but now that everyone is using them, movies have become boring because there is no underlying story worth paying attention. The Jason Bourne movies didn't use flashy CGI or over-used lens flares. Yes, they weren't sci fi but they had plots. And as for action sci fi with plots, think Alien/Aliens or, dare I say, Firefly/Serenity. Heck, even the first Matrix movie grabbed one's attention with its plot.
Of course, JJ's work so far will never be seen to be as bad as "Zardoz".

I agree with you. For me Scifi tries to get the science right and has a good suspensful plot. JJ's movies show a disdain for both of those.
Good movies are getting rarer since special effects are cheaper now and they're a surer bet than trying to write a good plot.

JJ Abrams is excessive lens flares as to Michael Bay is excessive explosions.
I think reboots of anything, sci-fi or not, is a tricky thing. Adding something new to an established genre can breathe life into it again but too drastic of a change can make long-time fans angry. One thing is true, good scripts are rare today.
