I haven't heard many good things about this game so I'm not too surprised by this direction, I think it takes a special game to be able to keep monthly subscriptions going.

It's not going free, they're ditching a subscription format and it's going on a one-and-done payment system. You pay once and you can play it forever.

Still not that interested in picking it up, though. I think I'll stick with playing around with mods in Skyrim.

My friends and I, avid Elder Scrolls players, were totally split on it: Some loved the game, some hated it with the firey burning passion of a thousand burning suns. "Oh it's not a real Elder scrolls game" they would cry, mirroring our own discussions of JJ Trek not being 'real' trek.

I didn't get to play it enough to make a real opinion. I really quite enjoyed the parts I did do, and doing actual dungeon crawls with my friends and having to actually use party mechanics was a real treat. However, I got extremely busy before I got to the mid-game really, so I can't comment on the end game at all. A few of my friends went to the end, still play, and maintain they have fun, so all I can give it is a second hand thumbs up I guess?

I will give it a whirl when it goes free to play. I just hope their free to play model is less The Old Republic and more Trek (Although if they decide to not go the grindy route of Trek that would be just dandy, and would likely snag a few extra buckazoids out of me.)

Well according to beth, the main game gonna be free, but you'll have to buy the succeeding expansions (and DLCs) not really sure till March tho, I'm just gonna sit and wait fer it~ XD

"The PC version of Tamriel Unlimited will go live on March 17, and current players will be automatically shifted over. If you've already purchased the game, you won't need to buy it again."

Pay for the main game and then pay for expansions would basically be the Guild Wars 1 model. It apparently wasn't good enough, because Guild Wars 2 went with cash shop and free content updates instead.

Not that they're doing that:

"Of course, there's still a benefit for those who want to maintain their paid subscription; ESO Plus is the name of the game's premium service, and it will include: "exclusive in-game bonuses, a monthly allotment of Crowns to use in the store and access to all DLC game packs while a member." Crowns will function as Tamriel Unlimited's premium currency."

So basically you buy the game, and there's still a Gold/Silver divide. Still not a good enough model for me. It's like if you had to pay $60 for STO and you're still Silver unless you buy a subscription. Except Silver is missing content.

Actually reminds me of DDO, except DDO has no entry free.
