Most importantly, the UFP runs on the morals and skill of the people in which it consists. However some could also argue the UFP’s constitution as it were, the Code of Conduct (CoC), has a vital role to play in maintaining order and procedure here at UFPlanets.com.
The current CoC was introduced back in 2008-2009, though it was not the first. It’s served us well over the years, but times change and we have to move on. As such, today I’m announcing on behalf of the rest of FEO, the retirement of the CoC and the introduction of two new documents, the Federation Prime Directive and the Federation Charter.
In essence what we have done, is conduct an entire review of all rules and regulations we hold on our site, that includes the Code of Conduct, Forum Rules, TeamSpeak guidelines, Command Position Agreement as well as other documentation scattered throughout the site, deciding which ones are relevant, which ones are duplications etc. From there we also sought to simplify wherever possible (given that our rules are largely all based on common sense) and create two binding documents of equal importance.
The Federation Prime Directive is designed to hold all rule and regulation-based clauses and it’s about over half the size of the CoC. For new and casual members, they’ll likely only need to read/refer to the Prime Directive.
View the Prime Directive here.
The Federation Charter is designed to hold all procedural-based clauses. In essence, how we as members should conduct ourselves in our work. It covers such things as Leave of Absences, the power of FEO/SFC as well as other matters.
View the Federation Charter here.
Overall, the benefits we see in introducing a two document rule set/constitution are:
- All rules/regulations are equally important but yet the segmentation of documents previously gave the impression to members that the CoC was the only important element. This should no longer be the case.
- Rules have been modernised where appropriate, removed where they’re duplicated or removed simply because it’s common sense or no longer relevant.
- In both documents, all sections have been titled to make sure the rules and where they are in each document is ‘transparent’.
- The reform has allowed for better documentation as to how members should conduct certain procedures, previously there wasn’t a ‘right’ place for it. Though FEO has not been over-zealous in documenting every procedure possible, just ones most important or relevant to members.
- For old and new members, the two documents and the two different purposes serves as a useful filter so that it’s easy to find the rule/regulation most relevant to them.
Alongside the introduction of these two new documents, based on feedback and previous issues, I’ve created a part of the site which better explains the process to members and volunteers, in dealing with judicial/member issues. That is to say, if a user/member has broken the Prime Directive or Charter, how best to go about dealing with the issue etc. Since the formation of FAB, I think there’s been some understandable confusion as to who to go to etc. Command Staff will have an additional thread created shortly which further details the process that should be followed, to make sure no issues fall through the cracks.
You can view the revised process here, and will be visible from there and the Community Support Centre here on in.

Personally, I think this is a huge improvement over the previous set of rules and regulations. Placing them in just two documents and deleting repetitive information should ensure more members are familiar with our expectations simply because there is less to read and remember. Well done!

I think this looks great, I can't compare it to the previous version as I haven't been here that long
