Allow myself to introduce....myself.
I've been into Star Trek for as long as I can remember. I was little when Next Generation was on the air, and I remember it being a big event in my house when the last episode aired, similarly, each time a series premiered, it was a thing the family would gather around to watch, one of the few shows we all liked, so it kind of holds a sentimental value to me. Also, space ships. Space ships are always neat.
For the gaming side of things,I've been an on and off player of STO since launch, maining fed side with only a small dabble into the empire's affairs. The last time I played was when the Romulan faction launched, so...it's been a while. Suffice to say, it's like a new game for me again. I'm hoping to dig in a bit more this time around, actually get into the current story line at some point, but alas, since my friends mostly play other games (Namely FF14), STo will be something of a side project for me. Some week I might be on nightly, other's...less so.
Out side of Trek, I like most Sci-Fi, with Star Wars and Warhammer being my next favorite 'verses to read into, as well as a wide variety of anime. Likewise, outside of MMO's, I 'm a big fan of RTS games, RPG's, and beat'em'ups being my main go-tos, while I dabble but never excel in shooters of any sort.
So, this will be my first fleet in game, and actually my first Trek fansite I've actually joined. not to say there arn't a great deal of fans out there, but I've never gone to a site focused on it. It should make for a nice change of pace.
As a side note, reading up on things, it seems Romulans sadly don't get much in the way of Science ships. I do love the romulans, as well as support roles in games (Healer, buffs, ect), but I take it perhaps federation may be the better choice if I want to go that path? Any advice for a once again newbie would be great!

Welcome to the UFP! I also grew up with TNG so I can relate. Unfortunately, Cryptic has been treating science as the next PvP, so it just isn't getting attention anymore. I hope that will change, but it doesn't seem like it will soon.

Hello Oddmagic and welcome to the community!
Are you into FFXIV as well? 
I'm a fairly regular FFXIV player. Mayrheane often says "Oh you're finally logging out!". heh. I just love the visuals and effects. STO has that in droves for space... but once you beam down to some place, the game breaks my heart.
Anyhow, I digress. We're a large community and it may feel a bit daunting, but always know that you just need to speak up, ask, or contact someone if you have any questions or need any assistance with something. Mainly your RSO (Recruit Support Officer) or other Academy staff, or really anyone you feel comfortable with.
