The first MMO I ever played was Star Wars: Galaxies. Mainly because it was Star Wars. It was a great sandbox game (before the arrival of the NGE), that would let you do pretty much whatever you want. There were no levels, there were skill points, you had 250 of them and there were 32 professions in all. You could spend the skill points any way you wanted.

You had five starting professions, Entertainer, Medic, Artisan, Brawler, Marksman each have 4 trees that you could go up learning by spending skill points. When you got to the top of a tree you could then start working towards the Advanced Professions. The beauty of the skill point system is that you could use them how you want to. You could dabble in one profession while also mastering two advanced professions.

Another beauty to the profession system is that there were hardly no useless professions. Architects built the player housing and factories. Armor and Weaponsmiths built the weapons and armors. Chefs made the "potions". Rangers collected the materials needed by the crafters. Then you had the Dancers and Musicians that would heal your mind wounds and battle fatigue. You had the Doctors that would buff you up so that you could take on a Rancor by yourself. Combat Medics for the poisons. You can have a very fun game without even having to pick up a weapon.

Of course there were combat professions. You had Swordsmans, Pikeman, Riflemans, Carbineers, Pistoleers, Tera Kasi, and more. Sorry I might have gotten into a rant there. I really did love the game that is till they introduced the "New Game Enhancements", or NGE which took the 32 professions and condensed them down to 9 professions and tossing some out, like Creature Handler, completely and got rid of the skill points for levels and turn the combat into a twitch style fps.

Now back to the topic of this thread, Some dedicated players wanted to experience SWG back in it's glory days before even the introduction of the Combat Upgrade or CU, hence the term Pre-CU. Decided to reverse engineer the game code and provide SWG pre-cu by use of an emulator, hence SWGEmu. On there own and through donations this team has reproduced the game as it was Pre-Cu. You can play the SWGEmu freely as long as you have the original SWG game discs.

I played the original game back in the day. Had lots of fun and met a lot of cool people. The emu just feels like a shell of that experience to me. I guess if you never had a chance to play it then it's cool but to me I rather leave the memories alone.

SWG was my first MMO as well...I hated the NGE but I liked the CU in some ways...it made every combat profession playable...Pre-CU had rather annoying and lame cookie cutter combat professions that if you didn't play them you were gimping yourself.

I was a fan of Pikeman...loved the Nightsister Pike...but Pikeman was so useless because it was well...the melee version of Carbineer.

Don't know so much about Pikeman. I was a Master Swordsman and paired it with Master Doctor. So i would sit in lagnet and would make money selling buffs then go to Dathomir and kille Rancors 5 or 6 at a time and then buy buff packs sell them rinse and repeat

Swordsman was one of the more powerful specs...did a lot of damage and in PvP it could attack mind.

My favorite spec was from Pre-CU though...was a complete Pistol spec with Master Pistoleer, the Bounty Hunter and Smuggler Pistol trees...I had 4 custom made pistols for depending on who I was fighting.

It wasn't the strongest but it sure was fun!

I enjoyed SWG back in the day and with most MMOs these days being WoW clones without nearly as much content than WoW I do still remember the game fondly. That said whilst the game was great in many ways it had plenty of flaws as well, even if the game were still live now with the height of it's population I don't think I could go back.

Part of me has considered trying it...since I think I still have a disk set left...but I don't know...my favorite specs weren't members of the cookie cutter OP crowd...so I don't know if it's even worth playing since there wasn't much to the game except PvP or RP (Which I can both get from more vibrant games (Maybe not STO but other games :p))
