Definitely dead. In the grand scheme of things, how likely is it that I'd be liberated really? Looking at TNG and VOY, it's clear that removing an individual from the Borg is a ridiculously rare occurrence.

I can picture it now.

My first instinct was clearly death. Assimilation sucks, live free or die, etc etc etc.

Then I thought, if there is even a slim chance of being rescued (7 of 9) then I should be assimilated, right?

But finally I thought that even if I were rescued... I would still die. We all die. So I would just accept death now rather than risk it.

I would have to choose death. It would be a spectacular death, as I would try to take out as many Borg as I possibly can (ultimately failing, probably slumping over in a corner on the cube, dying alone)..

But on the off chance of being rescued and disconnected from the hive mind, the realizations of the acts committed as a Borg would certainly affect me, and I'm not sure I want that weighing on my newly liberated conscience.

I would offer to everyone turning this thought problem over in your head - is your decision focused on self or on others? And what should the decision focus on? Was your first instinct to contemplate preservation, spiritual continuation, and chance for rescue? Or was it focused on the potential that you would become a weapon that would mercilessly force this same decision upon other thinking beings - i.e. as an assimilation drone? Or something else entirely?

I understand your points completely, and they are honorable, and possibly accurate. Playing devil's advocate though, what if you were assimilated, then subsequently rescued or detached from the collective by some other means, then were able to use knowledge that you obtained in order to free the entire collective, thus saving countless lives! I know that the odds of this are worse than successfully planning my financial future on winning the lottery, but the odds are definitely zero if you die rather than being assimilated. Whether you are assimilated or not, the collective will continue doing what it's going to do, unless something happens to stop them, and with you being dead, you have no chance to accomplish that. I believe that this is just as honorable a choice to make as refusing to allow yourself to be assimilated. Again, your points are honorable and I wouldn't tell anyone that they where wrong about how they chose to deal with a situation such as this. This is a very interesting thought experiment, not that we need to worry about being assimilated by the Borg...at least not yet!

That's a tough choice.

On the one hand if you're dead, you're dead. That's it. Game over.

On the other hand being assimilated, physically you survive and your memories would live on forever in the collective as long as it's around. But you lose your sense of self, your free will. You stop being you. If you were lucky maybe you'd be one of the rare few who could visit Unimatrix Zero when you regenerated but other than that you're just a mindless drone, not to mention one of the most hated races in the galaxy.

All of that on the slim chance that you get liberated one day, I don't know I think I'd have to go with death just because of how unlikely being liberated actually was. Because on screen anyway there's only been what? Three Borg who were liberated. Picard, Hugh and Seven if my memory serves. (Technically the Borg kids too.) Picard was liberated because he had a crew who wanted to get him back and Hugh and Seven's liberation's were accidents. There was no way Janeway would have willingly tried to liberate Seven from the Collective, if anything she would have expected the Borg to betray them and either shut her down or spaced her the second she could have if she hadn't had her link to the Collective severed.

So taking that into consideration, barring an accident or being on the right crew who wanted to risk getting you back, the odds of it actually happening are slim to none so yeah I'm taking death.
