Hi,
just wanna let you know about naval action which is the game that I am playing since its early access release last January.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/311310/
It's an open world pvp+rvr/economy based MMO which a lot of people seem to compare to EVE Online. It has also bare-bones PvE and a dedicated PvE server, however the PvE part is rly more of an excuse to grind XP and money.
It is in early access since January with currently 800 people online on server 'pvp one eu' between 8 and 11 pm uk time. The US server has only around 250 online at the moment during primetime.
The game has currently a lot of problems according to a fair amount of people on Naval Action's official forum. I suggest to read steam reviews and the forum if you're really eager to get into this game right now.
I figured that a lot of star trek fans like myself would be interested in this game considering the fact that you can sail ships like the USS Constitution or HMS Victory in Naval Action.
Personally, I think that it is a great game and would strongly suggest to add it to your wishlist on steam and maybe consider buying it once it reaches version 1.0!
This is a gameplay video which was uploaded only a few days ago to give you an idea how it currently looks like:
Here's a video regarding the PvP/RvR aspect of Naval Action. It's kinda like the weekly news of server pvp one eu which informs you about the latest developments on the conquest map:

I heard about this game. While I am mainly a PvE/co-op gamer, I'm not sure whether or not this game works for me because it appears to have some elements of a hardcore sailing simulator. I have played Silent Hunter III and IV which are WWII submarine games but I had most of the hardcore simulator settings turned off, though I did enjoy plotting intercept courses on possible targets detected by the hydrophone operator and then setting up for a torpedo attack when I get within range.
I do admit the game looks interesting though.

I still play SH3
Here's a new super mod called 'living silent hunter 3" from 2015. It has an extreme variety of merchant ships:

In Naval Action you'll have to use 'manual sails' to increase your turn rate what matters especially once you get into the bigger ships:
It is also a lot about understanding what you're up against and if the wind is in your favor or not.
Like I said, Naval Action has only bare- bones PvE, even when there is a PvE server. You would mostly do what's shown in my first video what you can of course do as a team with other players, if you so desire. Sadly, I have no idea if there are plans to make PvE more exciting or not but I'm pretty sure that the devs won't have the resources for story and quests..
