Next Gen, at least, tried to use actual science where it could and I think had actual scientists either on staff or on call to check things? And DS9, if I remember rightly, was less science heavy than most of the other series anyhow, so had fewer opportunities to go wrong. Given this, it's not too surprising to see actual parallels with scientific theories, and the show has certainly had a notable impact on technology.
Of course, the one area where it seems to frequently drop the ball is evolution. Last I checked, de-evolving into a giant spider, evolving from bipedal mammal with large brains and opposable thumbs into quadruped lizards with small brains and no thumbs and the very idea of evolution having any kind of direction or will are all complete nonsense.
But to stay positive, it is amazing to see how much of an impact Star Trek has on people. Whenever I think of the future and what it will be like in a few centuries (not that I'll be here to see it!), the world of Star Trek is the first thing that pops into my head. The more people who are influenced by shows with messages like Star Trek - that working together is a good thing, talking through differences is better than resorting to violence and that science and technology are there for our betterment and should not be feared - the better I say!

In my opinion, the biggest impact Star Trek made on the world is technology. Cell phones, touch screens, voice-activated interfaces, and many other forms of modern technology all have some aspects inspired by Star Trek technology.

I think you're right. I also recall seeing in a documentary somewhere that when the writers needed some plausible science they would write 'tech' in the script and a consultant would fill in the blanks with some science that would make sense in the situation, the story would be the main concern and then sciencey people would fill in the blanks with science and technobabble to hopefully make everything seem plausible.

During Voyager years, I attended a panel at ShoreCon that consisted of a handful of script contributors, and it was on fact like Chris described. They found this very frustrating. It denies the writer from writing a plot around science or technology.
They also had a requirement that the plot had to center around the principle cast, which is also limiting from a writing perspective.

I can imagine the difficult position the writers find themselves in. They could write a lot of technology jargon but it would put the average viewer to sleep which in turn means lower ratings. It seems very rare to find shows that has writers that keep scripts as technically accurate as possible while still being entertaining. The shows that actually managed to do this are often under-advertised by the networks or are overshadowed by shows that are more plot-heavy or "top-heavy."

Indeed it did, look at what 3D printers can do now and they are advancing them more and more each day. As close as it comes to a replicator for us, for now.

This is so true - Star Treks higher stance and moral sensibilities have a rightful place in society.... Shame not more people watch it and learn! :-(
