Ok so I'm mostly talking about the year of hell, So if they where changing the time line would it not affect voyager in some way? Everything is important to the timeline, so lets say this: If one of those races where say one of the first borg drones, the borg may have been defeated before coming to the alpha quadrant, so the enterprise would have never encountered the borg and they would have never came after starfleet. So seven of nine would have never been assimilated, and voyager would at the very least never have had to deal with crossing borg space and species 8472. Now this may have not been the case, that was just an example of what could happen. But according to the episode, we are to believe that the temporal changing did affect voyager in most ways? And before you call out "Temporal shielding" well if the borg where destroyed (Using the previous example) then seven of nine would have never been assimilated and the shield would have never been invented (or at least the way it was on screen).

    Man this is complicated.

To quote Miles O'Brien - "I hate temporal mechanics"

There is a point to this believe or not, not just me talking about the possibilities of this:

How did this work out for them? Was it just lazy writing or did I miss something in the episode?

I would strongly recommend reading the Department of Temporal Investigations novels, they do a very good job of explaining not only numerous examples of time travel but how the timelines and the multiverse works within the Star Trek universe. As for the Year of Hell specifically I would recommend regarding the Voyager novel 'A Pocket Full of Lies'.

The short and inelegant answer is that it has been theorised that for every single outcome that can possibly exist that outcome is played out in an alternate reality, this means that new realities are constantly being created. In Star Trek this isn't entirely the case, realities that would exist due to very small changes branch back in to their originating timeline, this means that whilst there are still many different realities there are actually far fewer than you might expect because the main realities are based on what is most probable to have occurred. Almost think of it a bit like a road trip, you know where you are going and have a route planned, you might deviate slightly but one way or another in the vast majority of cases you would arrive at the same destination, it would take something huge to change that where you end up somewhere completely different and in doing so really you've gone on a different journey entirely.

For The Year of Hell specifically, there could have been things that the Krenim changed that would have completely altered Voyager's interactions with the Krenim prior to those interactions ever taking place however if such changes did take place they would have created alternate realities, The Year of Hell happened in the prime universe which means that chain of events was the most probable, there might be scenarios where things were changed massively such as the example that you gave but that would have resulted in new and completely separate alternate realities so we wouldn't get to experience those changes.

With the exception of the few Mirror Universe episodes, the Alternate Universe films and a few other episodes we as the viewers only get to experience the prime universe therefore we sort of have to accept that no matter what temporal meddling goes on things work out the way they do because if they worked out differently we would then be going in to a different reality.

I don't know if that will make sense or not, writing this at 2am probably doesn't help, as I say the books do a very good job of explaining all of this but suffice to say the writers have adequately covered themselves.

I'm not fond of temporal mechanics either. There's so many ways continuity can be screwed up. I honestly wasn't a fan of the Xindi-Temporal arc in ENT mainly because it was a wasted opportunity to introduce the Earth-Romulan war officially on-screen and see more of Starfleet's other ships during that era.

As for me, I love temporal mechanics haha. You're exactly right, that would have had a huge impact on the Borg, so that's true. There could have been changes to the previous episodes but, as the story is written in the new Day 1, it's implied that everything's been "uneventful." I think that was written in there as a temporal margin of error, meaning that, in the past couple weeks, they haven't encountered any races that WE could have noticed a significant influence from previous episodes.

Let's say in the previous episode they interacted with a race on a planet nearby, then that episode would have been effected, too, so the writers made sure the only interactions they had were all in the same "Year of Hell."

When it comes to understand real temporal mechanics better, I believe that any actions by a time traveler are already part of history. That means it's impossible for the time traveler to "change" history in any way, the Ontological paradox. This paradox isn't in Star Trek though and would make the shows really boring haha.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Star Trek spin-off called "Time Trek" or something like that. Where it's more about Starfleet exploring time, rather than space. They are to travel in time and follow the temporal prime directive while still exploring history. I think that'd be amazing.
