I have to agree with you Vox. My excitement for the new series died tonight. I won't be excited to watch it on launch. I will wait until I see reviews.

Mine too. For all the things "wrong" with the new movies, I let them get away with it because I see it for what it really is, an alternate universe. It might be inspired by Gene's universe but it's a universe created by J.J and his people, so they can do with it whatever they want.

But the Prime Universe, that's Gene's Universe, that's his Legacy and for all the complaints that some fans have with various shows, like the hatred Voyager gets or that Enterprise gets, they all respected and followed Gene's vision and one of the reasons why the ships have had that 50 consistency in the Prime Universe, because that's what Gene wanted.

The man said it himself that the ship was as much a star of the show as the characters were and the actors who portrayed them, this doesn't fit that bill by a long shot, and even then it's a ship based on the Phase 2 design of the Enterprise, that was rejected, they couldn't even be bothered to try and come with their own ship design.

Even Stewart Baird who directed Nemesis helped to design the Scimitar and he knew nothing about Star Trek before he directed that movie.

Everyone needs to calm down. This was just test footage. The special effects are no where close to being done. We have no cast, no characters, no premise or plot. Seriously going to write the show off because of pre-production test footage? Even go so far as to say this isn't Gene's vision because of this? Taking the bridge a bit early aren't we?

So far, what little we've seen about this series has been disappointing IMO. The first teaser revealed absolutely nothing except the logo, and had some dodgy looking CGI... The broken planet looked like it was from STO. However, it was so short and had no content that I was able to forgive it for it's quality issues.

The second teaser we get most definitely has the worst CGI I've seen in a very long time. I'd say that even Enterprise and the later seasons of Voyager/DS9 had better CGI than what Discovery has shown us thus far. Even TNG's use of models and very limited CGI produced better visuals than that teaser. They're definitely hinting at some kind of Federation/Klingon co-operation with the Phase II design of that ship and the music, but regardless that ship design is the ugliest ship I have ever seen in science fiction. I really hope that thing is not what we all see flying around our screens come January.

Lots of people are saying that it's all pre-release and it will look better when the show airs. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. Either way what they've released to fans so far has been disappointing, and that's not the first impression that you want to make for a new TV series to succeed. If this is pre-production CGI, then IMO they shouldn't be releasing it as it does more harm than good. Make it near production quality or don't release it at all. If this is near production quality, then I'm at a loss for words.

I'm also concerned that we've yet to hear anything about casting and the show starts filming in just over a month. Usually at this point in pre-release, there is much more substantial information available about a new TV show. They've only given themselves 4 months to film, edit, re-film, and apply post-production before the show launches... I get the feeling that this show is being rushed to meet a deadline, probably to capitalise on the attention that Beyond and the 50th Anniversary are bringing to the franchise and to perhaps get a flagship show onto CBS All Access to push subscriptions. I personally think we're seeing the production quality suffering as a result.

However, this all speculation and only time will truly tell. Until something more promising is revealed, I don't really have high expectations for this show.

They made a teaser from pre-production test footage, and based on what was the first teaser it's the second time. So yeah, my hopes are very low...

Seriously as I said in the chat I'm currently rendering the Enterprise-E with only myself (a hobbyist student) and just 1 iMac and it looks better than this...

So the ship is a little wonky..... We got ourselves a series set between ENT and TOS!!! At the very least they kept it in the "prime" time line. With it being set between ENT and TOS, that gives the writers a lot of room to maneuver, and I'm sure its a period in time that a lot of fans wanted to explore. I know I do.


I'm not about to write it off just because we saw one thing we didn't like. If that's the way I went about my life, I don't think I would have a very good life.

The music sounds like the Klingon Theme, too! Probably has to do with using Klingon design to fight Klingons. Or, after peace with Klingons, the UFP used Klingon designers.

I seen this design ship before when I was a kid and was so thankful Gene Roddenberry went with the Refit design.

I can't believe they went with a Klingon hybrid ship...why...? Why...??? I'm in denial, that must not be the actual ship.

Personally, I think that this is just a test to gauge public opinion, of which they will get backlash on.

I will bet money they will redesign the ship.

That trailer literally left me going 'meh'.

Regardless it's just ugly.

I will try to reserve judgement but this is not a good start, hopefully with the series spanning several vessels we will see better designs.

I think it's important to try and keep an open mind, after all we are Star Trek fans.

With that being said what they have released so far has not done a good job of selling this new series to fans, we don't know yet if it will be good or bad but they should be trying to convince us it will be good, it's just like Star Trek: Beyond the first trailer really disappointed fans and actually wasn't very representative of the film itself, so why did no-one think that before they released it?

In this day and age with massive marketing departments, consultants, focus testing and the ability to just read fan opinion from the internet you would think companies like CBS would better understand their customers and be more mindful about what they release to fans and how they frame it. Based on the reaction so far they don't see to have done that and that is a shame.

I'm still hopeful for the new series there are some great people working on it but so far CBS aren't doing a good job of selling this to fans, that needs to change.

I for one think that yes the CGI is poor which is no doubt damaging the appeal of the ship, I love the more odd looking ships amongst the ST lineup and I for one am excited they've gone for something a bit more adventurous as the 1701 lineup looked like an evolution of the same shape, which doesn't always appeal to me!

I love the idea it's set in a period we know very little about as well, the 80-90 years between kirk and Voyagers return has been well and truly explored and I'm glad they've left that alone at the moment, personally I think this should be set between 20-50 years ahead of kirk judging by the ship registration number.

If I had a Bucket list for the show it would have consisted of an unusual ship and an unused timeframe so I have two big ticks for it so far and one massive cross for poor CGI!

I had secretly pinned my hopes on Romulan war/birth of the federation but I suppose there is always chance it could happen :-)

As Trekkies I think our objective and by that I mean our stance should be that whether it's good or bad we support it, greater viewers means greater budget and better scripts, if we reject it and shun it the studios will be less inclined to spend the money on the show we have been waiting far too long for!

I say we give it our support and try to be constructive, perhaps even tweet them some ideas or have a UFP stance on the project and declare our support of it.

Lastly I think our external media team ought to release a statement of support for the show and see if we can get on board with it somehow too :-)

I just cannot understand how that design was ever considered to be decent by anyone, it just doesn't work together as a concept.

The saucer looks good on the right body as pretty much any Federation ship from the NX to the Sovereign will show, and fans accept and love those designs. With the right curves the saucer, or a variant of it could look pretty neat.

The angular body and those nacelles on the other hand would look pretty good on any KDF type ship, or some generic sci-fi ship.

But putting the two components together just looks utterly wrong. The curves of the saucer and the angles of the hull just to not gel together right. And it seems to me like that hull has been shaped that way just to look like a Starfleet comm. badge, so it's as if they have no idea what a ship should really look like.
Heck, there's a reason the TMP guys never picked that concept design from the Planet of the Titans back in the day for the first movie, it look terrible compared to what had gone before.
