I went to the Starfleet Academy Experience yesterday at the Intrepid museum in NYC and decided to write a quick review about it for any fleet members who are also in NY or are planning on visiting NY soon.
I have to say I was pretty disappointed in it, I wasnt expecting anything spectacular, but the overall quality just felt like the museum curators took advantage of the 50th anniversary to earn a little more money. They had a lot of fake props on display, like phasers and uniforms that mostly looked like cheap knock offs, I've seen better props made by a single person than wherever they got those from. All of the interactive stations were pretty bad as well, they had "recruitment exams" for every division but they all had really lame questions like "Which doctor do you like the most?" and had McCoy, Crusher, The Doctor, and Bashir as options. They had a Kobayashi Maru test at the end that was kind of interesting, but even that felt half-assed because at the end I was told I was extremely aggressive but I only attacked when the Klingon captain flat out said "If you wont attack me, I'll attack the Kobayashi Maru." It also had scores for options that I didnt even know existed, each phase gave you 4 options: Attack, Evade, Shields, Defend. Once, it randomly changed one of them to increase power to transporters, but I have no idea how I triggered it.
Two interesting things they had were a wristband that you could attach your e-mail to so every time you went to a station you could scan your band and it would track your progress and then send you your results by e-mail in a format like the PDF I have attached. Granted I have no idea how I scored so high in any of them with all the lame questions, but it was a nice little thing. That and one of the costumes they had on display was Picard's Robin Hood outfit
One thing I DO recommend going to see is the space shuttle Enterprise because next to it they have the original shuttlecraft Galileo from the TOS set, on loan during the Academy event.
Now im not saying to not go to the event, but just think very carefully on how much you want to spend on it. Im just hoping that the Con in a few weeks is way better since I've never been to one
Thanks for the review! I have been thinking out if I wanted to plunk down the money to do the Academy. I think I'll save it for the Enterprise. WHich I saw as a little kid at Edwards AFB.
