I have 6 Tattoos
Two of which are on the bottoms of my forearms. When I got them I worked for the Department of Corrections in Kansas. Which has no policy against ink so long as it doesn't indicate you're involved in a STG (Security Threat Group aka Gang). The tattoo on my right forearm is a Wolf which nobody would bat an eye at. However the tattoo on my left arm is a phrase in German; Lebe Frei which means Live Free.
I realized when I got that ink that some could misconstrue the meaning behind it. I even expected some sort of inmate confrontation. But I went ahead with it. Because I know why I got those words inked on me and in that language. The Phrase being a reminder that life is short and tomorrow isn't promised. Having it done in German because I speak German and I am roughly half German. So it's honoring my heritage.
Oddly enough in the 3 years that I had the Tattoo. Only one Inmate actually asked me about it and I politely explained to him what it meant. The forearm ink hasn't been a problem in my current occupation. Which deals more with the general public than working in a prison does. But if people ask I have no issue explaining either tattoo.
There is more forearm work I want done but it will wait. My other 4 tattoos are all covered two of which have a very deep and personal meaning to me. But long story short my ink doesn't define me as an employee or my ability to do the job. Neither of my visible tattoos are offensive and I hope that they wouldn't be a deterrent for any future employer down the road.
If they are I suppose it's their loss.

Most people here are saying context matters, and I agree. I want to add to that context.
Everyone should be very well aware that tattoos are not universally accepted, and it definitely depends on what and where you get it. If someone gets an inappropriate tattoo for a job they're applying for - be it due to symbolism, size, and/or location - it's a sign of poor judgment and planning.

Personally I think tattoos can be very defining and artistic, however some people have them on their faces and completing covering their bodies and in many customer focused roles they don't look very professional if they are literally everywhere or in intimidating locations I.e. - spider tattoo on your face

I do not have any tattoos but I don't think we should judge/discriminate a person by his/her look.
I was allowed to wear my combadge at work, so why not tattoos ?
