Christmas season is here, well, the main day is tomorrow! Some people may have gotten items they cherish forever on this day, others might have had them anyway. So, that one item you love, maybe it's your childhood teddy bear, would you duplicate it? Then you would have two!

Also, this wouldn't work for money, since it'd duplicate the serial number and that's gonna get you in trouble!

While I haven't narrowed mine down to just one... I do have a few I'm struggling with which to pick the one... in almost every case I would say by reproducing it it becomes half as prized. The very term prized possession implies singularity, making it very unlikely for that to ever happen.

I think I have the perfect solution for this problem... Since replicator's don't easily exist in real life, I've decided to acquire a new T6 ship, then duplicate it for another of my faction captain's.

I would not. I think that the value is not material worth, but the sentimental value it holds, having multiple would lessen the value. Yes, if you lost one you would have another, but you would say 'oh no' in stead of 'OH NO!' Abundance reduces value.

It is the same for material worth, rarer things are worth more because of sacristy, if we found a moon full of diamonds and harvested them for our use they would become common and cheap much like gold in star trek - to quote Quark, "worthless gold". Much the same would happen if you found a moon populated by your favourite teddy bear, it would lose its value and that would make me sad, as I very much love my teddy bear, and just how unique he is.

Obviously it would not lose all sentimental value as that is your 'one'. But I do think that a direct copy would have that affect.

Wow that is longer than I was anticipating about a purely hypothetical situation! I have perfect priorities!

The "oh no" would not be a serious, but what's worse, losing your favourite teddy and having a backup or losing your teddy and never being able to find it ever again? I have lost treasured items in my life and the loss still haunts me to this day! Maybe I put too much into things that were given to me.

Oh no, I have the exact same feelings about things, probably why I am so overprotective toward EVERYTHING that I own, but I still don't want to duplicate them, because then I would have to pick, maybe even subconsciously, a 'primary' and 'secondary' prized possession, and this they would not be equal anymore and so one would be a more painful loss than the other. I would rather have a small transporter and a small viridium patch so that if I lost one I could get it back!

Personally I find my truly prized possessions are not prized because of the object, but because of the meaning behind them: A cherished gift from a lost friend, my grandmother's ring (Which sits on my wife's finger), a lock of hair from my kid's first haircut, are a few examples.

No. Because to me if I have a prized possession then it is a unique one. If duplicated, then it is no longer unique.

I suppose that's where my mind differs from yours and possibly others. The value I place in an object is more from looking at it, giving me a visual memory, same with entering a location. So scanning something in for storage and recovery would actually be perfect for me, although, that's duplicating something multiple times, which is cheating!
