I should mention going in that I'm really more going for fun and (admittedly) looks with my selections, and a little light RP, which I especially enjoy doing with my BOFFs.
But I've narrowed my favorites down to:
-Tactical Escort
-Experimental Science Vessel
-Advanced Research Vessel
with runners up being Temporal Escort and Intel Cruiser, though I doubt I'd actually pick those.
My character's spec is Science, and that's my favorite spec because I really enjoy debuffing enemies. To that end, I've more or less avoided engineering, because I care very little for defensive or healing skills. They can, for me, take the tension out of the game at times. I normally have my engineering officer working with either Shields or EPS boosts. I'm not really looking for a PvP ship, but I suppose it would probably be wise of me to pick something that would hold it's own against other players if fitted properly.
I also really enjoy zipping about, which is why I've got that Valiant and that Dauntless class up there, but I've found that Tactical /abilities/ are a little dull to me, though, like with Engineering, it might just be that I don't know what to pick to make things interesting. But then, that's what I like about the Valiant and Nebula BOFFs most, the BOFF specializations are on things I wouldn't normally pick extra of, especially so with the Nebula (Sutherland I suppose?), since I have the added flexibility of a universal Lieutenant Commander slot.
And then you have the fleet versions with the stronger hulls and extra console, so I'd really appreciate some input before I spend money on something I don't completely understand.

Experimental Science Vessel, and Advanced Research Vessel are some very good ships and will do well and a Sci you will get the most out of it.
