When I play, which has been a bit since my computer died, I run a variable set of missions, or go through the story, just depends on mood I guess

Oh right, PUG = Pickup Group.
I learned just now the term came from musicians, where they'd get together due to a particular gig and then disband afterwards.
When we queue, it's effectively like that - we're joining in a group because we're put in the same mission, and then we disband afterwards.
This is in contrast to pre-made groups, which I suppose would be like forming a band before finding a gig.

Well, they are with duty officer cluster missions. So really cant visit them more tell your officers to send supplies or build a infrastructure of the base etc. You have to fly to these locations. On the map they have icon with three heads on them. Usually along the outside of the galaxy map. When you fly to them they look like nebulas.
But here is a link with more detail info about it and other things related to doff that I found helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/sto/wiki/advanced_doffing
I find it pretty fun managing your officers and ships with admiralty. But I'm weird haha.

DOffing, DSEs (but not Delta DSEs, those guys use majik!), patrols, whatever the daily grind is, and the 'special event' of the week. With all the DOffing, I don't really have to mine DIL, I have over a half million waiting to be refined. That should hold me for a while. I'll do the occasional PUG if I'm really bored, but there don't seem to be many takers outside of the Red Alerts. Oh, and the DOff assignment chains. Apparently there are several that you (now) have to buy access to in the exchange. They require you to use some kind of item to get it to trigger. I did that for the Tal Shiar DOff chain. Cost about 2 mil EC to buy the items. Then there's the DOff chain that you can only get if you own a Suliban Cell Ship. I need to get me one of those.
Then there's trying to finish the Accolades… You think grinding through Episodes is tedious? Try running through the Accolades sometime. The path to 2409 and the Romulan history ones are nuts. They better be worth some serious points.
What else? I hide in the bushes at Starfleet Academy and fire off my Cochrane rocket when people are running by. Some of them stop and look around, most don't. I'm weird like that.
Sometimes I'll pull a Dirk Gently in sector space. I'll find someone that looks like they know where they're going and follow them.
I just finished patrolling the entire bottom two rows of the Alpha Quadrant. Visited every system to see which ones had patrols and did them.
There's stuff to do if you don't have anything specific to do. If you really want to set yourself a goal, turn to the DOff chains or the Accolades. They'll keep you busy.
Also, don't forget to scan every system you enter. Collect those materials. You can never have too much Hydrazine!

Slang is a fun thing, especially when a lot of it is cultural in it's origins but with the advent of the internet it gets used globally.
"Toon" is just a short form of saying cartoon, which is what all player characters actually are if you thing about it. At the time the slang started being used, player characters looked more like cartoons than anything else....graphics have come a long way since then.
PUG is an acronym for Pick Up Game. Basically, someone wants to play a game but they don't have enough players so they "pick up" whatever random people happen to be around and want to play.
