I'm quite looking forward to seeing how this plans out, was extremely disappointing to see people in the YouTube comments being extremely harsh towards Jodie Whittaker being cast, making jokes about her gender and saying things like #NotMyDoctor, but I'm optimistic the majority of people will welcome this change, it'll mix things up a bit and should be interesting!

I personally like to believe that they chose Whittaker because she was the best fit for the type of Doctor that they want to portray moving forward. Don't forget, we're getting a new Exec Producer after the Xmas special, and a whole new writing team. In theory, this is going to be the equivelent reboot of the series direction that happened just after Tennant regenerated.

I don't subscribe to the theory that Whittaker was chosen to make a statement, or to "stick it to the man" or any of that other BS. I kinda felt like that when they cast Bill, the coloured female assistant who also happens to be gay. That was a little "poke you in the face PC", but they wrote it really well for the most part. There were quite a fair number of times I thought they were playing the 'gay' card a bit much, but it was so refreshing to have another assistant who wasn't in love with the Doctor. It almost reminded me of when Catherine Tate was the assistant.

Lets see how things turn out. After all, it took a very long time to get used to Capaldi as the Doctor, and even now, at the end - I still don't rate him as one of my favourite Doctors. He's shown a lot of growth in the role, but I just never liked him as the Doctor. I'm curious to see what type of Doctor we're going to get next, especially now that we know who'll be playing the role.

It's just that for 50+ years, the Doctor has been a man and this is a bit of a change for some people (myself included). There are plenty of other women who have had important parts in the show's history, not all of whom were stereotypical "damsels in distress". Take Amy or Clara for instance. It'll definitely be interesting to see where they'll go with this and I'll wait to see a few episodes before saying if I like the change. Smile
People have a problem because for the last 50 years (and 12 incarnations) the Doctor has been male. I loved what they did with The Master (Missy), so I hope they can achieve the same effect (with a little less genocide, I'm looking at you 'Utopia').
Why does that matter? Is it really 'no girls allowed?' So what if it's a change? Is this pointing out that there's a degree of sexism involved?

Star Trek had female crew members and officers, too, but no captains. We shouldn't let Janice Lester's remark stand true for Doctor Who, too, that Kirk's "world of Starfleet captains did not admit women to their ranks."

It's cool to have a female Doctor, I am looking forward to the next Season, but after Missy, and the Female General that was a man for the first time in all his/her regenerations I saw it coming and I totally like the decision.
