This reeks of fanfiction story writing. Like some bad role player wants his character to be related to a major character from the originals.
I know I'm gonna be hated for saying this :p
But the entirety of Discovery feels like fanfiction written in the JJTrek style....which this would fit in the JJVerse and I'd have no problem at all with it...but they're forcing it on the Prime universe.

hahaha I thought the same exact thing, production wise. Of course, I got to bring up that the new design of the ships existed before the timeline split the two universes haha

Doesn't matter what kind of sister it is, tbh. She's a Starfleet officer, and from the look and sound of the trailer, she's somewhat going to be important. That would justify Spock to at least mention her successes as one.
Did they hire tumblr fanfic posters to write the main character?
Spock didn't even mention who his dad was (Vulcan Ambassador) to Kirk until the Enterprise had to escort Sarek to a conference. Don't underestimate Spock's ability to play things close to the vest.

Probably because Spock had no reason to. There is a very big difference between an Ambassador and a Starfleet Officer. The fact that she seems to be a pretty important officer in Discovery gives Spock a reason to mention her acomplisments to Kirk..
Again like I mentioned before, this just reeks of bad fan fic. I can't really see a reason to make her related to Spock other than just "oh hey my brother is Spock, hihihihi)
Maybe. We will have to wait and see on how much the rest of the federation knows about Discovery or the incidents depicted in these trailers. Could this be a top secret ship, a secret mission...happening on the outskirts of federation space......
Everything I've seen trends positive in my opinion that this is going to be a good show.
I wish they would have gone with Kelvin-verse more so because they would have had more flexibility as far as story goes. I wouldn't have been opposed to 50 or 60 years before TOS either.

Spock didn't talk about his dad and his brother, not so much because they aren't in Starfleet, but because that's Spock's character to keep that to himself. Kirk could have read Spock's records and saw that Sarek was his dad, but didn't.
Maybe Spock's adopted sister is on record at Starfleet, but Kirk never bothered to check, like with Sarek and Sybok, so Spock never thought to bring it up.
Our need to talk about our family might come from a more emotional response, due to our love for them. Since Spock's culture is about repressing that, he wouldn't give into that emotional response to share his family details.

I'm thinking it could be a top secret mission, too, full agreement on that.
