Folks, I wanted to put out a quick poll and see what people thought about the Ares Pacing. Things have slowed a bit, and your fearless leader needs to post. But I wanted to make sure it was not just my own dragging that's causing issues and see if the system is setup the way people want it. So take a look at this poll and comment as you see fit.
Note: I don't want to change things just for the sake of it - we already did a soft reboot a few months ago.
Note Two: I also welcome newcomers who might be more willing to participate if there were something different, or "more" of what we are trying to do.

This is a tough question. On the one hand the number of applications when this sim started clearly shows the idea of simming an entire ship is a popular idea. The near total shutdown in activity however indicates there is a problem somewhere. Considering this i would think that something in the actual process of posting or creating the posts is throwing up some hurtle preventing players from actually putting up posts.
Taking the minimum post requirement, while standard practice in most rpgs, could form a hurtle for some to even join with concerns about being able to meet the requirements or feeling that posting becomes more of a chore than a fun activity.
Nevertheless i think setting a minimum post requirement, while making sure that this minimum post requirement isn't to demanding, would be a wise deciscion. It would, at the least, give the leadership a set point at which they could prompt the offending player and maybe inquire if there is problem and offer assistance when needed.
One thing i am missing, or less than clearly established, is the protocol regarding joint posts or the protocol regarding writing posts that involve the ships or crew of other players. This may cause insecurity about doing posts in some people preventing them from posting in fear of inappropriately using or influencing other player's ships or crew.
While a bible sized tome of rules, regulations and etiquette can be intimidating and cause some to choose not to participate, clearly defined rules and protocols describing how to do what, and not to do what, prevents insecurity and gives confidence that some might need to participate. In the Ares project there is little said about joint posting and how one should go about initiating one or how to respond if a JP suggestion is received.
I realize that the above would mean a boatload of extra work for our commanding officers, writing etiquette and rules, keeping track of who hasn't posted in a while and then contacting them and assisting those who need it with whatever prevents them from posting but i think this has a greater chance of getting the sim running and keeping it going than resorting to reboots, soft or hardforks.
I think the concept we're currently running with is clearly one that resonates with people, seeing the number of applications. The setting of the story i personally think is fascinating and i'd like to see it develop further. I'd also hate to see the Ares project die befrore it had a chance to get started. We've not even gotten through the first meeting in which the rest of the story will get set up.
On the other hand i can understand if it turns out that a majority prefers for a story set in a different period or set in a different universe. Personally i love the idea of going on in the prime universe where canon ended. But i think i'd love any universe or time-period, so that states little about what the general preferences are.
To summarize:
I think we should set some, not too strickt, rules for minimum posting. Command officers should then contact 'offending' players to inquire why and where possible offer assistance to help them to get them past whatever hurtle is blocking them.
We should establish that it is ok to do joint posts and provide etiquette for how to go about that. Same goes for posting that influence the ships and crew of other players.
Lastly we should inquire if maybe to majority of players would prefer a different time setting, universe or story line. I doubt it but that maybe a reason for some to decide to change their minds about joining us.

I just read Keenan's idea, and i think it is a great idea. Combine this with the occasional prompting from command officers when we need something from a specific player could possibly be the fix for the problem... If so, disregard my previous reply.

I think we should at least condense the number of ships, and write at a max of 1-4x per month. I don't want USS New York to shut down though, people can just request to join us haha there's two of us, so far. I'd like to see 5 active writers per ship, if possible. That way, even if two are out, three will keep it going.
If people miss out, then they can catch up while the rest of us keep the story rolling. They can either back post or pick up where we are.
We can't even really do our logs if we wait for everyone because we don't know how much time has passed.

I personally think the idea of sicking with everyone having their own ships is a good idea. That's the thing that drew me to Ares, whilst I haven't been active as of late, I am wanting to get back into it but sadly a individual crew member role wouldn't suit me.
It is possible however that you can run both, the only issue being it will be very time consuming. I am hoping to continue my current storylines over the next week.

I have been thinking about this and i think there's another thing we could try:
In the Ares Task Force we could have one ship on which people could take a position and play like the traditional rpg's. It would preferably be a ship currently in the game who's captain would be willing to open his/her ship for this and to whom applications can be sent.
I would like to offer my assistance in any way i can to anyone who wants to play but is having problems getting started. Or those who're uncertain about how, or those who'd like to get into it doing something like traditional JP's (joint posts). If there's anything i can do to unstick stuck players, or get players started, or even applying.... whatever.... Just pm me and i'll do whatever i can to help.

I agree with you, as I also prefer the ship RP. But I do understand the need of doing only a one person RP on a single ship, and I think both of them could work together

Of course yeah, I certainly think that both ship and a crew based RP would be the best idea - need someone who is willing to lead it!
