How about that...?
“We could have put Star Trek on Showtime, on the CBS Television Network or Netflix, Amazon, they all wanted it for a lot of money,” Moonves told investors. “We determined that Star Trek would be far better for All Access and will earn us more money.”

I'm good with it. As long as it's making money it will keep being made.
The nice thing about streaming is it's about subscribers, not advertisers.

I'm all about it making money and I like that it's about subscribers and not advertisers. I just don't like the idea of them taking advantage of fans. Seems greedy.

It's also going to be to promote their platform, they need shows to bring people to it, since they are competing with other companies.

I don't think this guy understands how things may play out with his "earn more money".
As I mentioned before (another thread)... how will this "earn more" when the likely scenario may be:
- Person waits until full season is completed/available on Access.
- Person subs for *one* month for $6-7 US
- Person watches full season
- Person un-subs
Would that one time $6-7 from a single person earn them more than potential TV advertisement or syndication revenue?
Another potential problem is that would 'sub only' service truly reflect the popularity of the series? If most are barred from seeing the show, the show will not generate great ratings of popularity. And ratings drives the price of TV advertisements, no?
I wonder what the CBS's Access member base population is sitting at? And how many of those members are Star Trek fans?

Thing about subscriptions is a lot of money is made because people forget to subscribe or they feel it is too much effort, it happens a lot. You will have a handful of people who will unsub, but the majority will remain subscribed, even if they never use the service again.
It's a more guaranteed revenue stream than advertisements as well, since ads depend on when your show is aired, if you don't get the prime time slots, then you aren't going to make much money. Once it has been shown and run its exclusivity course, they will probably sell the licence out to others and make extra money from that.
Overall, people are lazy and they hate ads, so they will sub and forget to unsub.

The problem is, as it stands, none of the studio run subscription services bring value that is in line with what they are offering. Why pay CBS to be able to enjoy one or two shows when you can go to Hulu or Netflix and find a half dozen things to watch?
I think most Star Trek fans are going to stay with their current subscriptions, not subscribe to CBS and just pirate the show, and this is going to cause it to have one or two season max regardless of quality. of course they are going to blame piracy rather than take in to account that most people ARE willing to pay for content, but that people are cheapskates who aren't even going to look at you if you aren't selling something at a fair price which doesn't happen often because the media industry resists market change.

It's worked for Sky in the UK with NOW TV, as Sky holds the rights to broadcast Game of Thrones in the UK. For those who don't have Sky, the have to sub to NOW TV to watch it, or pirate it. But I think overall, it has work out for them with money from people forgetting to unsub. Will it work for CBS? Who knows, it's a gamble. I don't like companies holding monopolies over shows, but it is what it is.

This is why these services are struggling, and... Well, I don't think CBS has picked a winner to float theirs. Star Trek's longevity as a cultural touchstone belies the fact that while successful, none of the series had the same share their present like they came to hold in collective memory much later.
Second, they've done a really bad job keeping a lid on production troubles. Format and setting changes late in the game, prominent show runner departures, at one point a producer even said it was cancelled. That's a biggie - that kind of statement, even when it's wrong, has a way of coming true because a producer said it.
Third, they've been a bit too candid about the other series in development being a "back up" or "fallback" or even "replacement" for Discovery. So just in case potential viewers missed the part where CBS had no faith in the series, they'll let you know they have no faith in it.
The sad part is, if (likely when) it fails, it'll be held as a failure of Star Trek, rather than a failure of the distribution model it was wrapped up in.
