Hello everybody,
This is something I have been thinking about a lot lately after re-watching some episodes of the Dominion War arc of Deep Space Nine. What happened to the cardassians after the war?
Given the fact of the war that happened and the countless Federation, Klingon and Romulan lives that were lost over the course of it. We know the Klingon empire does not like giving back its territories after they have been "liberated" I don't think the Romulans would have either. We also know that the dominion went on rampage against Cardassian holdings after the turning point.
Much of Cardassia Prime was on fire and in open revolt, whole cities having been flattened and most of their fleet destroyed.
What I think may have been possible was that the federation enacted a state such as the United States did with Japan at the end of World War II. What are your thoughts?

The following is based on what has happened in the Pocket-Books Trek expanded universe.
They got heavy aid from the federation to help recover. The government installed a democracy and they joined the Khitomer Accords (A mutual defense/trade alliance between the UFP, Klingon Empire, Cardassian Union and the Ferengi Alliance) during and after the Borg Invasion and the Rise of the Typhon Pact (A rival mutual/disfunctional Trade/Defense alliance opposed to the Khitomer Accords powers and consists of the Romulan Empire, Tzenkethi, Tholian Assembly, Breen Confederacy, and the Holy Order of the Kinshaya.).
A good book that has the nitty gritty details of what it was like Before, during and After the Dominion war from the eyes of Rugal, a Cardassian born and abandoned on Bajor during the Occupation and sent back to Cardassia (Season 2, Episode 5 of DS9, "Cardassians") would be "The Never-Ending Sacrifice" by Una McCormack. This is a stand-alone novel that you don't really need to have read many of the preceding books, its recomended that you do.
As of the latest book-universe year, 2386, the Cardassian Union is a major political and economic power in the Alpha Quadrant and as all but totally recovered from the Dominion War (Economic and humanitarian aid is still on going as of 2385 on Cardassia Prime and its outlying colonies).
