When I hear people complaining about the conduct and mannerisms of the Discovery crew, I'm reminded of Captain Janeway's perspective.
"It's not surprising they had to bend the rules a little...they were a little quicker to pull their phasers."
Could it be that our perspective and opinions of Discovery are shaped by watching 178 episodes of TNG, 176 episodes of DS9, and 172 episodes of VOY? In contrast, we've only seen 79 episodes of TOS...79 episodes. With Discovery, we're not even going to get 20 the first season?
In the newest series, they had time to explore philosophical understandings and interpretations. Janeway, for instance, is casually chatting about the old days with Kim. We're not going to see a lot of that in Discovery due to time restraints.
"Of course, the whole bunch of them [TOS crew] would be booted out of Starfleet, today."
The Discovery plot is going to move at warp, much faster than we're all expecting. Mix in the time period of battles and bending rules, this is what we're going to get.
"But, I have to admit, I would have loved to ride shotgun at least once with a group of officers like that."

To be honest it just feels like to me they're trying to reboot Star Trek into the Kelvin universe. The show just screams Kelvin in every single way and even some of the cast has hinted that this is a reboot.

So what if it is a reboot in the Kelvin universe? Really though, what harm to the canon would that be? The visuals are probably inspired by JJ and I bet members of the same team are on Discovery.
As long as it holds to the ideals of Star Trek, I'm happy and I don't mind them not using 1960s sets haha
