Abilities and weapons can have Expose and/or Exploit. The question is, if you can Expose a target, how do you know when the effect is in place?

When a target is exposed, they'll have a spinning set of circles on them - that means they're open for an exploit attack. If the target is exposed and you have an exploit weapon, you'll notice the secondary attack icon on your power tray starts to pulse.
If the exploit shot is a kill shot, that's what vaporises the target.Attachment 7635

It's always a good idea to carry an Expose and an Exploit weapon.
Prime them up with a Full Auto Rifle, Stun Pistol, or Gatling Gun, and then take them out with a Sniper Rifle or Split Beam Rifle. If you're doing Solo Content with your BOFFs, equip them with a mix of Expose and Exploit weapons.
There's even an option to 'Target Next Exposed Enemy' in the keybinds, default for this is 'G'
And I strongly suggest switching the keybind for swapping weapons to a key close to 'G', like 'B'. It's far easier to reach than the default, 'Z'.

I generally like to give all my BOffs Expose weapons, while I carry a split beam to immediately be able to take advantage of Exposed targets. The BOffs didn't seem to use Exploit weapons effectively (at least the last time I paid attention), just firing the secondary whenever it was available.
In practice they tend to have a mix because of all the unique/special toys I've accumulated over the years, but in general I prioritize that for them. Medic BOff gets a long ranged weapon though, that's got more priority.

I tend to do it dark's way, too. My away team gets Expose weapons as their main pew-pew sticks, and I get an Exploit weapon (usually a Split Beam, sometimes an HD rifle), and I'll often have one or two kit modules that can lay down an Expose. When I see the circles, I let loose with the Exploit attack.
(If you haven't monkeyed with your keybinds too much, I believe the G key will target the nearest exposed ground target.)
