Players whine there's no content and then don't bother to play content.

Players spend years creating the ultimate build to fight a battle in space and then don't want to fight in space in a mission....

To be fair, there are two scoops of blame to be had here. Players will only jump as high as the Devs set the bar, and no further. This queue could really use some manner of redesign that motivates the players to actually do stuff.

Yes absolutely. It's a stale old mission that has suffered from the fact that a lot of entitled players expect rewards for bugger all work these days, plus the fact that STO is so grind crazy it pushes people to the lazy way of earning.

Were i to redesign it i would make the contribution of players mean something. Those who close portals get extra marks, those powering the satellites get extra marks. Those sitting doing noting just get the base and nothing else.
Then have it so that either the timer ends after a) the station is fully powered or b) once X portals are closed. If they must have a timer then have the rewards get exponentially bigger as more and more portals close, that way the elite players get a just reward for doing more.

After the timer expires is generally ok and most people play on from that point.

I just feel the need to chime in that I had a friggin' outstanding PUG run of this last night. I was playing my FedRom in a Lukari Hokuun (one of two ships she has that will close rifts faster, her Laeosa counts as "Warbird" and not "Science Vessel" for this stuff), and I noticed that one of my teammates captaining a Manticore was tearing Mirrors up. So I just sailed along in his wake, and shut rifts while he took all the aggro.

In the end the station was undamaged, and we had something like, 45 rifts closed. Felt gooooood...

Been playing this event last few days, is it me or is the normal feel a LOT harder?

I used to be able to do this event in my sleep, even with one or two AFKer's. Now even without any AFKer's it feels very overwhelming the number of rifts and ships that come out. I know I haven't really optimized my ship since the last "weapon balance", but even then I feel like my ship that was doing 40k dps is doing squat now.

I *think* Cryptic made some changes where the difficulty level was increased proportionately. With much hubris, I started the event on day 1 entering the Advanced queue and got properly mauled. Thinking it was a fluke, I went back in, but then I noticed the PuG team and recognized everyone else was in high-end ships. I don't mean T6, per se, I mean ships used in common high-DPS use. So, while I was getting my warp core handed to me, these guys were sailing through.

When I joined the Normal queue, is when it seemed challenging, yet fun ... the excact opposite of my Advanced experience. Frankly, I don't recall if I ever did Advanced before this round, but I thought I did.

Maybe I was wrong, heh.

The event has been flawed since the original inception in 2014, due to that set timer. It didn't matter if you cleared everything - and there is a maximum number of rifts that spawn - you still had to wait down the timer. In the high end groups I've run it with, we've had over 5 minutes of dead time before.

If closing the rifts actually bypassed the timer, you'd see a lot more participation. As it is, I'm in the DPS channels joining afk private matches because nobody there cares about the relatively puny amount of bonus marks you get.

People who AFK in PUGs needs a good smack, though.

Once upon a time, back in the days, it was a consistent queue which provided double XP for quicker levelling. Most of my characters did it to get levelled ASAP.

Sure, but back then it was double xp + consistently available like any Borg STF.
