Interesting points, yet I feel confident EverQuest was (is?) true MMORPG that should not be left out of discussions. Less because I personally played it for years, and more that I'm sure WoW would not be where it is without EQ.
he Realm Online, and Ultima Online were the first true mmorpg's, free of the NSFNET limitations which ended in 1995, and were launched late1996 and early 1997.
It was Everquest (launched 1999) who would not be where it was/is without those two and hinted at what might become possible one day which turned out to be WoW.
Not saying it hasn't played its part but more as the missing link between TRE/UO and WoW.
But that was sadly not even close to the point i was hoping to bring peoples attention to. I was hoping to steer some people towards more realization/awareness of the loot box/microtransaction/season pass/dlc/pre-order system, which is now destroying not only mmo's but the entire game-industry. Ah well, can't win em all I guess...

I would say the game-industry isn't being destroyed. Rather, it's evolving. Now whether or not it's evolving into something that's 1) sustainable and 2) enjoyable and entertaining..well..that remains to be seen.
Personally, I'd rather the industry to have remained with the subscription business model. It provides stability of income over time but that doesn't generate the short-term profitability levels that most businesses, and their investors, desire from today's economies. People want their money now , not a return on investment five years from now.
