I just hope this benefits the players & isn't a blatant time/resource sink for the sake of it. I could see where the already STO rich would have no problem with this, but if it doesn't offer the desired results & is another drain it will all depend on the values Cryptic gives it whether it will be worth chancing it. Dang it another gambling mechanic LOL I guess that is why Cryptic made it look like a slot machine.

True, yet I believe this is a QoL improvement. It's a system that has been requested by a vocal minority for years. Gone are the days when drops are either literally trashed or sold for a pittance to game vendors (less to players IF they even buy it from you).
Also gone are artificially (and typically extortionately) priced items from Lockboxes, or it's complete opposite where items are gained via RNG that have no value to anyone else, so ... trashed? Case in point: I recently opened a box that awarded a random Infinity weapon. Choosing Pulse Phaser BA I got a VR Mk XII [CrtH]x2 [Acc] (iirc). This is absolute garbage and there were no examples on the Exchange to gauge it's current worth ... which is nothing. BUT with re-engineering, this worthless item can actually have greater value either on my boat or as a commodity.
If anything, the system provides yet another Dilithium sink, which is a way to keep players in-game, which is all Cryptic wants from us.
Dear Q, I hope the roll cost is still 500 Dil each. That is such a sweet number because salvage will be EASY to get.

This should also bring down EC costs, I would think, because if you are salvaging gear, you take away that gear from being use to get EC. Okay, probably not, but just a thought.

FWIW, Scar, if you haven't tried it out yet, the dil cost is a bit more than what it initially was on Tribble. Rerolling a single mod went up from 500 dil to 800. Yes, higher than it was, but still livable, especially since I don't see this as something you use to reroll every mod on every piece of equipment you have.
I tried it last night with two phaser arrays on the USS Perseus, and got rid of an Acc on one and a CrtH on the other, both replaced with Dmg. I am officially a satisfied customer.

Dunno. It didn't trip me up too badly, but A) I tried the system out on Tribble first a week ago, and B) they're never gonna use "it made sense to Generator" as any sort of litmus test for sanity.

UGH. Every single thing I saved for gear can not be re-engineered. Before someone says "maybe a bug" I saved all the gear you couldn't salvage. I've been hoarding so much gear. >_< dammit all.

Well, I think the Devs admitted only certain types of items could not be modified at launch: several Lobi or Dilithium-bought items for example. last I heard Spiral Wave Disruptors were on the "too bad" list ...

Sadly, it seems like most things that come out of Reputation boxes are neither Re-Engineerable, nor Salvagable. On the plus side, those items will still at least be an EC revenue stream.
(FTG, if you need Salvage, the most self-reliant thing to do is whip up some stuff via R&D, then break it down.)

On the whole it looks like Rep, lobi, Lockbox, Fleet and a good chunk of mission reward gear is off limits for salvaging. Several quest reward items alongside rep gear and lobi stuff can’t be re-engineered either.
The weapons you get from the factional rep stores can be tinkered with though from the looks of it, just not salvaged.
Fleet, crafted and lockbox gear are all open season for modifying, with a few exceptions. You cannot, for example, re-roll the SHeal mod found on elite fleet phasers.

I think to jump-start everyone's salvage stockpile, you might want to craft/break down a crapload of R&D Mk IIs while you're on a given character, then when you're about to log off for the night, make 5 of whatever Mk you feel like blowing the components for (IIRC, you can get up to Mk VI using just C & UC components; adding Rares into the mix will yield what, Mk X?).

I dunno, I never find myself doing a lot of Foundry. You're probably right that that way is better, but I never got into Foundry after seeing what most folks did with AE in CoH.
