Hi folks,
I'm seriously wondering about this new threat they've introduced in the latest feature episode and how it is canon? Were they mentioned at all in any of the Star Trek TV series, because I've genuinely never heard of them before.
Those swarmers merely only reminded me of the swarmers from Star Trek: Beyond. And what do you guys think of them bringing on René Auberjonois (Odo), finally to the game?

IIRC, the Hurq were mentioned by Worf in DS9, but never shown.

Well this:
http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Hur%27q
is the only details on them in all forms of Trek thus far. There's really little to go on other than them being a GQ species and an ancient threat to the Klingons.
Only mention of them is in one Enterprise episode and in the DS9 one where they look for the Sword of Kahless (which apparently the Hur'q stole).
They do appear to be insectoid so i'm hoping for some very nice looking alien models and interior maps.
As to their motives...no idea. The memory alpha source claims they went extinct but maybe they just went into hiding underground like many species of insects do, in some sort of dormant stage until the time is right?
Perhaps they have been hidden all over the galaxy for thousands of years and only now are waking up to "feed" or scavenge for resources?

Interesting, I think I'll have to re-watch that entire DS9 episode just for focus on that little reference.

I personally don't like them resurrecting a supposed extinct species, but oh well. They have to pull the next big baddy some where, right?
Same here, but it seems to be there MO at this point - with the Iconians. They practically visualized the Iconians for us, when they were left a mystery in canon, with only a confirmation of their presence via Preservers in TNG I think.

Interesting.
I also discovered upon some research that there was a Star Trek game which featured the Hurq already, "Star Trek: Invasion", where Patrick Stewart voiced Cpt. Picard in command of the Enterprise E along side Worf voiced by Michael Dorn.
One of the interesting lines read by Patrick was "The science vessel, USS Discovery, has been destroyed by the race known as the Hurq"

Actually, didn't many people suspect that the Iconians had left our galaxy for Andromeda? So them showing up again seemed a little more natural.
I never knew that the Hur'q were from the Gamma Quadrant. This might explain probably why the Founders suddenly decided to help us and more importantly sent Odo as their ambassador. It would make the most sense. Probably they woke up in the Gamma Quadrant and are wrecking havoc there.
But what if they woke up not because they want to conquer everyone but because someone did something that they don't like? Yes, finding out people hurt their children, but I'm going to bet it was something the Founders/Dominion did over in the Gamma Quadrant.

The funny thing about the preservers is that it was never officially stated on screen that the race from TNG was the preservers. I know the producers implied it via production notes after the fact.

Well the Iconians vanished 200,000yrs ago so they'd probably have no knowledge of the Hur'q even existing, nor any of the rest of us to be honest. Which makes them coming back all the more challenging because the galaxy has simply moved on from when they were in charge. They pretty much did the same thing the Vaadwaur did, they wanted their old empire back but the galaxy had forgotten them and ignored them for thousands of years.
These Hur'q things seem a bit more complex though. I can't really understand why a GQ race would invade and try to ravage the Klingons, who had to be pretty far off the beaten track for them to just accidentally bump into them. Were there many Klingons going round the galaxy back in the 14th century? I suspect not as there seems to be a hint that the Klingons took their warp engine knowledge from the Hur'q when they defeated them and in the 14th century they'd have been pretty primitive.
I'm guessing if they were invaded it was when they were pre-industrial perhaps and as such little is really known about the conflict now due to records being lost. Perhaps everything was lost when Kahless was fighting for power against Molor?

Well perhaps they were looking to conquer new space and they were afraid or at least didn't want to push a war with the Dominion? Perhaps they wanted to enslave a warrior race like the Klingons to fight the Dominion?

This. This right frickin' here. The story is for other people. Me? I look for reticles. If they're orange, they get the hot end of an antiproton beam. (Used to be polaron, then plasma, now it's antiproton. Next week? Who knows.)
Here's the burning question.
They just reemerged from the ground and into ships capable of putting a hurt on DS9? How did the Klingons ever get them to go underground in the first place? Or was that in the story part that I skipped?

That’s one thing that’ll need to be made clear. Only sources we have seem to be vague but indicate that they invaded the Klingon home world when they were a pre-warp civilisation, possibly even pre-industrial based on some vague timeline stuff. So how did a bunch of Klingons with only swords and knives defeat a space faring race who can unleash swarms if ships at once. If their ground tactics are anything like their space ones then they must have been like swarms of insects armed with lasers.

With apologies:
You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have huge bugs with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!
Thanks for that. I just wanted to be sure I wasn't off on some incoherent tangent that had already been cleared up. It's good to know that my confusion is both shared and by design.
