Considered from an anthropological view...we know that history is "written by the winners". A thousand years ago the Hur'q were terrorizing Q'on'os and the assumption is that they were both superior in numbers as well as in technology. There's no way the Klingons should have won. But nevertheless, the Hur'q disappeared and the Klingons declared victory.

Now, did the Hur'q actually get defeated? Either by the Klingons or by some other outside force? Did they simply withdraw and go into hiding/hibernation as part of some long term lifecycle phase? Was there some other reason for them to retreat from the Beta quadrant into the Gamma Quadrant?

Either way, the Hur'q did leave...and since the Klingons were the ones left on Q'on'os, it is logical to conclude that they either
a) defeated the Hur'q and drove them off
b) watched the Hur'q leave and thought they'd defeated them
c) watched the Hur'q leave and even though they realized they hadn't really beaten them, claimed such due to simple Klingon pride

In other words, just because a thousand years of Klingon legend claims that they defeated and drove off the Hur'q, it doesn't necessarily mean it's what really happened. Without the Hur'q side of the story or some historical/archeological evidence from a third party, it's nearly impossible to piece together what the truth of the matter actually is.

Perhaps with Odo returning with the Dominion Fleet from the Gamma quadrant, we'll soon get some additional information to that effect.

You know, maybe they hurt them really badly with those planet killers from the start of the game in the Klingon War. So it wasn't that the Klingons did anything other than planet size obliteration. Or those weapons could be weapons that were actually the Hur'q's originally that the Klingons used against them. Sounds like something the Klingons would do.

Planet Killers were established to be from another galaxy in TOS, but I highly doubt that arc has anything to do with Hurq, since the Hurq last attacked QoNos before it was a space-faring race. It is an interesting thought though.

Interesting speculation. Perhaps this is where the Dominion/Founder/Changeling story line would come in and STO writers might take this route to also explain why changelings never liked "solids". Perhaps there was an involvement centuries ago during this war.

Further- we haven't seen a Hur'Q... we've only seen their minions, the Drentzuli or whatever. Yeah, the ships are flagged as "Hur'q fighter" during the mission, and Martok says "those are the Hur'Q!". But if you listen to Captair Paar, she says something to effect of "engage the Drentzuli!"
While I tire of another Overlord hidden, Minion underling leading the charge ala Iconians and Heralds... it is a trope that works.

I didn't realise this at the time, but with the blog raised today - Jayce Navy Interstellar - the Enterprise-F as it appears during the mission is no longer an Odyssey class starship, but has been refitted to a Yorktown class.

That’s one thing that’ll need to be made clear. Only sources we have seem to be vague but indicate that they invaded the Klingon home world when they were a pre-warp civilisation, possibly even pre-industrial based on some vague timeline stuff. So how did a bunch of Klingons with only swords and knives defeat a space faring race who can unleash swarms if ships at once. If their ground tactics are anything like their space ones then they must have been like swarms of insects armed with lasers.

I'm sure the pre-industrial Klingons somehow acquired a copy of Earth's classical frequencies and blasted them on the Hurq.
