Kirk, Picard and Janeway. They are some of the most well-known and loved Star Trek captains to date.
But people have varying opinions on who is the best and who is the most liked.
Comment on who you think is the best captain, not just Star Trek but all sci-fi. And vote on the poll.
My all time favourites are:
1) Picard.
Because he is the most British Frenchman around and always uses words first and as long as possible before weapons.
2) Sisko/Janeway.
They both tied for second as they are both bad-ass and very likable.
Least favourite would be William Shatner, that's because, though his character was good in TOS he himself is not a very nice person overall and abuses fans constantly.

Nice, I liked how they actually expanded on him as a character in Kelvin as Kirks mentor/father figure. Have to admit I was really sad when he died!

Sisko
While morally questionable, and certainly suffering from reading too much Les Misérables, he still had the audacity to contaminate a planet in pursuit of what he believed to be one of the greatest threats to the Federation.
While it can be argued that the end does not justify the means, and that Sisko was blinded by what became a personal vendetta, no other Starfleet Captain listed in the poll, I believe, would do something of that sort. Whether right or wrong, it shows that Sisko will do what he needs for what he perceives to be the greater good, even if it means sacrificing his personal morals and conscience to do so. A sacrifice that he has made other times (bringing the Romulans into the Dominion war).

These things and more are why I like Sisko, to me he felt the most Human. Not to say there is anything wrong with the likes of any of the others up there, but honestly Sisko felt the most Human...willing to do things that would weigh heavy on his conscious for the greater good.

Mine was a toss up with sisko or janeway. I like style with a captain that is real with its crew and yet playful with them. Not too serious but when push comes to shove they are not ones to mess around with.

It's interesting how everyone has a different criteria for determining favourite.
Personally I picked Picard because if there's someone I'd want to know or work for, it'd be him.

Overall, I still have to go with Picard. A Captain that needs no explanation as to 'why him'.
Yet, if I had to choose a Captain, based on certain criteria or situations, some stand out a bit more. Say if, I had to select a Captain to 'fight a war' or 'handle a serious conflict'. I would have to go with Sisko and Kelvin Kirk. Those are Captains you know have what it takes and will do everything to win that war or conflict.
If it was a Captain to serve under on their ship as a Senior Officer/Staff, Janeway or Archer... after Picard of course.

My favourite was Archer with Janeway in second and Picard/Siskonas joint third!
Archer was a true pioneer and he could have achieved so much more had Enterprise had not been robbed of the completion of 7 seasons! :-(

Favourite Captain for me is a tie between Sisko and Janeway. Sisko because, like Qaeylen and Sorotia said he came across as the most human in a lot of ways when it came to making the wrong choices morally for the right reasons. Case and point one of my favourite episodes of not only DS9 but Star Trek in general In The Pale Moonlight. Where he and Garak try to trick a Romulan ambassador into thinking that the Dominion were going to attack Romulus. It doesn't work and Garak kills him or at least helps orchestrate it.
And although SIsko hits Garak for it Garak basically says The reason he came to Garak for help is because he knew Garak could and would do what was needed to be done and to quote the man himself "It worked. The Romulans joined the war and all it cost was the life of one Romulan, one criminal and the self respect of one Starfleet Captain."
And the end of the episode is basically Sisko saying that he lied, cheated and is an accessory to murder and that the worst part of all is that he thinks he can live with it. Now granted he repeats that several times as if trying to convince himself of it but the fact that he still willing made that choice and wrestled with it, while acknowledging that a part of him thinks he can indeed live with what he did for the greater good. And even if he couldn't it doesn't change the fact that in order to win a war he made that decision.
As for Janeway, she spent 7 years in the Delta Quadrant without any aid from Starfleet, did everything she could for her ship and her crew and still managed to get most of them home while dealing a huge blow to the Borg in the process.
After that I'd go with Picard and Archer. Picard because he was always more of a talk first, settle things diplomatically before shooting guy and Archer because he was a pioneer and essentially had to make things up as he went along with every encounter he had as there wasn't a Starfleet guideline to help him out with back then...plus he had Porthos and I love Beagles.

I put Captain Picard because I find him the most relatable to myself. Plus it's hard to beat a great British accent like his in terms of voice.
