    Since the Sign-up and Prelude thread is a beast (and that the prelude is closed), then I propose a new thread for Chapter 1. Ideas presented in the Prelude thread could be carried over here to keep them current.

    I have a question with which I'll lead off this thread Scarlett was kind enough to make:

    We started out with the premise that Jim was a LTJG, and the XO of the fighter squadron. As I looked at our cast of characters, I see that there, Jim has been noted as a full Lieutenant, and is Squadron CO.

    My question is, are we ret-conning that, such that it was always the case? Or will Jim be getting a quick field promotion? I'm fine either way, but I think the latter makes a smidge more sense to me character-wise (in the sense of, "I can justify my having gone a year's active duty and making it to LTJG in a field different from the one I'm in for this story, but being away from piloting long enough to make full Lieutenant, and then going back, starts straining my credibility").

    Just my personal thoughts, if you do *not* retconn it... it will provide you with the opportunity to provide more depth to Jim. Personal thoughts and self-evaluation with being suddenly put in that position provides a wealth of insight into Jim's persona.

    Stuff like that is always kind of fun to write and do, which again my own opinion, is better than just saying it was "that way along". Smile

    BTW, does the ARES have an actual squadron (like 12 or so fighters)? Or was it just the two fighters or four fighters (2 pairs)?

    Indeed, I've been sort of "game-planning" Jim's reaction based on the not-retconning-it assumption. Kind of why I'm hoping we do it that way.

    I think Eagle's spec sheet for the Ares said she's got 8 fighters, two flights of four. This is in addition to Flyers and shuttlecraft. I'm about to leave the office or I'd look it up myself. Wink

    Should I jump right to it? Detecting Orion pirates on sensors? Or tactical detecting them?
    Allan suggests a good point of discussion (or at least it had me extrapolate from his query): how do we "make" side stories (besides the Cardassian plot) that will clearly involve other crew?

    I would recommend using PM's to coordinate side stories. I'll use this as an example: Allan and I talked earlier using those and we'll feature a Ferengi security officer soon and will eventually have sparring practice since his character is trained in fencing and my character is the CTO.

    Oh yeah. Generator and I did the same for our characters in the Prelude.

    Yet, both examples highlight two players taking their characters and doing something that involves those specific characters.

    In the example Hood used, the scenario would involve other players and characters. So maybe the real question is, who is (or whom are) the "GM"?

    I would say if anyone wants to include another active (i.e. on the roster) character, just open up a PM dialog or arrange to meet online in TS to work out the story plot and arc. I think anyone is open to any creativity. That's the fun part about the SIMS.

    From all the posts so far and with Eaglesg's adding in, I think he is very open to letting Allan and Nesta guiding/starting new subplots to keep the story moving forward. Run with the ball, I say (my opinion), and keep the fun going. Wink

    If that "pirate attack" scenario happens, and happens in a relatively quick time frame relative to our departure from DS9, it could be the reason for Lt. Cole's sudden promotion.

    Speaking of which did we ever decide if the hanger deck was going to be a separate thing for the fighter squadron, like say they converted the secondary shuttle bay or if it was just going to be part of the main shuttlebay? I know we talked about it but I don't think we ever actually decided.
