I’m getting to that time again where I’m in the notion to tinker with my PC again. As it’s only 2 years old (apart from the 1080 which is 2 months) I’m not looking at new hardware as such and instead turning my attention to more practical concerns, namely the case, PSU and fans.
What I’ve got ordered so far is the case, a Cooler Master CM690 III which despite being a touch on the older side now, is bigger than its replacement, the 590 III, though I will have to remove one of the drive cages to get the GPU to fit without squashing everything.
Fan wise, I’m looking at the Corsair ML LED fans (solid colour ones, not the multicoloured) but I’m not 100% decided on these just yet. I’m not entirely sure if I could use a splitter cable and power them all from to the motherboard so they have a bit of auto control or if I should just let them go full whack via the PSU.
That brings me to the power supply - my current is a Corsair HX1000 which is now about a decade old so I think it’s time to get it replaced. I’m looking for something modular as I’d like to tidy up the case and keep as much of the cabling out of sight as possible, it I’m not sure what’s good and what should be avoid these days, plus I’m open to getting a cabling kit if it helps tidying things up.

I would stay with Corsair and get one of the newer HXi or AXi series power supplies - https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Catego...=#rotatingText

Ta for the heads up, there’s an HX1000i or an AX860i I’ve seen so I’ll probably end up going one or the other. They’re both the same price so it’s really just a toss up between more watts or the digital monitoring.

As Jordan said, if you can figure out your load, it may be better to go for the digital monitoring PSU if you don't actually need 1000W.

Maybe I am wrong but the "i" at the end means intelligent so I think both can do digital monitoring also the last Intel CPU's are very power hungry.

PCPartPicker will give you an estimate of your total wattage if you make a list with all the components for your computer. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it seems like it could be useful

Buy Gold standard and if you are not doing heavy OC or using multiple vid cards or mining then a 650 gold is more then enough . your current Corsair HX1000 is over kill . when I was running an SR2 with both CPUs OCed to 4.5 Ghz with a single OC Vid card 32 Gb ram water cooled with 3 loops ( one per cpu pluss 1 for GPU) I used a enermax 850 watt platimax psu
even my AMD system running two G34 Opterons OCed to 4 Ghz folding for a cure 24/7 for about a year was using a 750 Gold standard

Done the Partpicker thing this morning. While I forget exactly what my Corsair RAM is, the power load came out as roughly 500w, so I should be good with the 860 model, ta folks.

Always a good idea to budget 100-150w extra to account for any future upgrades, overclocking, or if your CPU/GPU has turbo-boost functionality.
